Question about Samsung HCL5515W 55" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Convergence out and turns itself off

I just got one of these sets and it will turn on, but "no signal connected.." is not level across screen and when in the menu you can tell that the RGB guns are not lined up, there is also some vertical bowing of certain colors. I think red is the furthest out of alignment, seems like someone might have messed with adjustments.
Also the set will turn itself off sometimes just whenever, other times it seems to turn off when you run the perfect picture adjustment. I am an ET but have never dealt with a rear projection TV before.
Any ideas what I should check first?

Thanks JB I have a model number #hcl5515w samsung 55 inch and the color adjuster wont work at all on the green and the blue is a little off too what do i need to do??

This is a convergence problem that should be relatively easy to resolve, I am assuming that the set is new to you rather than new. If new, it should be under warranty and if opened would void the warranty. If new to you and you can solder, you should be able to fix this. First, realize that there are potentially dangerous high voltages present inside the set even when unplugged. Locate the convergence ICs (large black ICs attached to a heatsink and marked STKxxx) and resolder the pins. That may resolve the problem. If not, then replace the ICs. Check the area for small valued resistors that may be defective as well.

Keep us posted.

Quick test of the plasma screen itself:

1) Turn on the TV
2) Try to bring up an on screen setup menu using the remote or buttons on the tv.
3) Does the menu appear? If so, the screen itself is ok.

If it doesn't come up you make have an issue with the screen itself. I am not sure it would be possible to set contrast and brightness settings such that the picture would completely disappear, but I suspect you should be seeing something on the screen just from having turned it on.

We also need to know more about what you have connected to the television. HD televisions typically have several inputs on them including HDMI, digital cable, VGA and component. Let's say for example you have PS3 connected via HDMI. You can tell the PS3 to send audio across the HDMI cable as well as video. You also have the option of running separate connections for your audio signal. It is the existence of these options that make it necessary to understand where and how you have things connected, very specifically.

your tv most likely has a bad vertical chip or cold solder on this chip. Another thing is that the connections on the vertical yoke connectors are broken and need to be resoldered....John
