Toshiba a9 in crisis as fatal mistake made! Tears shed.

You have no real problem. Just reboot your laptop and let it boot up all the way, then Press and Hold the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys and launch the Task Manager. When the task manager opens click the Processes tab, then click on the columnar heading Image Name to sort the processes in alphabetical order. Look down under the Image Name column and see if you see explorer.exe. If you do, click it once to highlight it then click End Process at the bottom of the window on the right side.

Click File at the top of the window on the left side, then select New (Task Run...). The Create New Task window will open up. Type: explorer.exe and click OK. Your desktop items will start reappearing.

Don't have a an icon

Please give more details as to what is happening and when it happens?

If you are saying your computer boots up but there are No Icons on the desktop, then a virus or infection has hidden them or changed some settings.

Click the Ctrl/Alt/Del keys to start the Task Manager. Press and Hold the Ctrl and Alt keys then hit the Del key. When the task manager opens up click the Processes tab. Under the processes tab click the columnar heading Image Name to sort the items running in alphabetical order. Look to see if you see explorer.exe running under the image name. If you do click it one time to highlight it then click the END PROCESS button at the bottom right of the Task Manager Window.

Next click FILE at the very top left corner of the Task Manager Window and select New Task (Run..). When the Create New Task window pops up type in: explorer.exe and press OK. Your desktop icons and start menu should start populating.

My laptop is HP Compaq 6720s Volume, Power, and Network notification icons are missing from taskbar. They cannot be re-enabled from the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties as they are disabled or grayed out....

This is a simple fix in windows vista or windows 7. hit the keys CTRL+ALT+DELETE simultaneously and release. The screen that comes up click on Start Task Manager.

In the task manager window click on Processes Tab. Look for explorer.exe and highlight it and click End Process. Click Yes to stop it. When it is gone from the list, click the Applications tab and click on New Task. In the run box that pops up, type in explorer.exe and click OK or hit Enter. Once your task bar and icons repair look in the system tray area by the clock and the missing icons should now be there.

Hi micochereami,

You can fix this issue by restarting the "explorer.exe" services. To restart the explorer.exe service, please perform the steps given below.

  1. Right click on the Taskbar and click the "Task Manager" to open it. (You can also press "Alt+Ctrl+Del" or "Ctrl+Shift+Esc" to open the Task Manager.)
  2. In the Task Manager window, please click the "Process" tab.
  3. In the Process tab, locate the "explorer.exe" process.
  4. Once you have located the "explorer.exe" process, please right click and select the "End Process" option.
  5. Then, please click the "File" option in the Task Manager window and select the "New task (Run..)" option.
  6. Then, in the Create New Task window, please type "explorer.exe" and press the Enter Key.
  7. This should fix the issue.
Good Luck!

Please post if you have any questions or require further assistance.

My icons will not come on my desktop

This maybe due to the "explorer.exe" process not running. Try pressing ctrl-alt-del, to start the task manager then select the "processes" tab and click on "file". In the "create new task" window type "explorer.exe" (without quotes) & click OK. Your desktop icons should magically appear!
