Hi.
Go to Run and type "Devmgmt.msc" and press Enter........
Go to Universal Serial bus Controller. See if there are any red colored cross? If yes, right click and enable those USB Ports......

Does it matter which usb port I connect a printer cable to?

No problem as to which port you plug in, but make sure the Com port/RS-232/USB Port is enabled to detect the hardware. The device won't detect the hardware if you haven't made the changes in BIOS or port enabled in device manager (system properties>hardware). Hope this solves the query.

My USB Ports don't work. Is this just a plug and play to replace or do I need to purchase a new CPU.

is it only one or all usb ports that doesn't work. Check your device manager and see if the Usb device are still working or the computer is able to detect it. If it is, and is able to detect and display your Usb ports then they should be working alright. There has been a virus that been going on lately that cause the computer not to read device detected to the usb ports since I had this same promblem before and it wasn't a hardware issue, but a viral issue. Had to run the latest definition and then formated my laptop to factory default.

Hte usb 2.0 ports are not recognised

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Classic View
Click System
Click Hardware
Click Device Manager
Does the "tree" show any "question-marks"?
Expand the 'USB' branch of the tree.
Does it show that the device-drivers for the USB 2.0 ports have been installed?

Access: http://support.dell.com
and click "detect my system",
and download the offered USB device-drivers.

My HP compaq d530 doesn't detect any USB drive. I'm trying to upload a sound driver onto it and I don't have a CD. I put the driver onto a USB drive but the computer doesn't detect the drive. I just...

So we have two problems one your sound is not working and two your usb drive is not detecting any connected devices, correct?
Starting with the sound simply use a friends computer to burn the audio driver onto a cd. Next install the driver on your machine.
Problem two the usb. Remove the flash drive and try plugging in any other usb device such as a printer or camer or cell phone and see if windows says found new hardware. You don't need to install it this will simply tell you if your usb port is functioning or has a problem. if you do get a found new hardware message then your usb port is functioning and may only have a problem seeing your flash drive. Try uninstalling the usb port in System Properties. Right click on My Computer then left click on Properties. Now click on the Hardware tab. Now click on Device manager. Now go to the bottom where the usb devices are and uninstall all usb devices and when your done restart the machine. See if you can use your flash drive now. Other wise check your bios settings for the usb devices to see that they are infact set correctly and if you cant do this take it to your local pc repair shop and they can do this for you.
Hope this helps.

Flash drive

Hi phun2008

Did your question get answered? (I'm not sure what "no thanks" was in response to.)

Your flash drives should work fine w/ Windows XP. They should be detected by the operating system as mass storage devices - plug-n-play - w/ no need for drivers installtion, etc.

You may, however, experience detection issues w/ them on systems w/ older USB hardware. If the flash drives are USB 2.0 drives, they will not be detected on systems running USB 1.1 or earlier - regardless of the OS (operating system) installed.

On the other hand, if they are USB 1.1 flash drives, they should be detected fine on both older and newer USB ports as USB 2.0 is "backward compatible".

I hope this helps.

Hi, I have a Belkin G USB Adapter and have tried to add it to my desktop. Unfortunately my computer does not detect new hardware. Can you help pls?

does this usb port work with other things?
Try another usb port, sometimes usb extension ports or hubs don't carry enough voltage to power certain devices.
