Question about MSI KM4M-V Motherboard

Problem installing Windows 7 on MSI KM4M-V

I have an MSI KM4M-V KM266-8237 motherboard with an 2Ghz AMD Sempron, 1 gig of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 5500 OC 256MB AGP 4X video card. Sound, LAN, etc. are onboard. I'm trying to install Windows 7 and every time the computer loads Windows off of the installation DVD, it gives me an error before ever getting to a GUI. The error says "classpnp.sys" cannot be found or loaded.

In searching, I've found that this might be due to the BIOS settings that the NVIDIA installation guide recommends, specifically a setting that recommends turning OFF a PnP aware OS and how this might conflict with IRQ setting. However, I never found that setting in the Phoenix BIOS so I never changed it. I'm running version "6.00PG" dated 7/28/2004 and haven't found any BIOS updates via the MSI Live Update utility.

Am I on the right path or way off in trying to get Windows 7 installed?

But this computer IS an upgrade! Hah

According to reviews Windows 7 is less resource hungry than Vista, which was one of Microsoft's goals. There's even a review that runs it on a 1.8Ghz with 512Mb of RAM and 64Mb shared video. I can run Ubuntu 8.10 with full Compiz fine and I really just want to dabble with Windows 7.

If I could just find the PnP option in the BIOS to see if it's ticked or unticked. I was searching around through it again last night and didn't find jack...

Hello,

Thanks for using fixya.

My name is Carlo.

Your computer might not pass the system requirements that's why it has an error. Or, you can try installing it one more time and check if it will work. Computers do mess up sometimes.

Here's the system requirement of SIMS 3:

Desktop PC (Windows XP + SP2):
CPU: 2ghz Pentium4 Processor or Amd Athlon 2000+ Processor
RAM: 1 GB of RAM
GPU: 128mb Video Card (GeForce FX 5900 or Radeon 9500)

Desktop PC (Windows Vista + SP1):
CPU: 2ghz Pentium4 Processor or Amd Athlon 2400+ Processor
RAM: 1.5 GB of RAM
GPU: 128mb Video Card (GeForce FX 5900 or Radeon 9500)

Laptop (Windows XP + SP2):
CPU: 2ghz Pentium4 Processor or Amd Athlon 2000+ Processor
RAM: 1.5 GB of RAM
GPU: 128mb Video Card (GeForce Go 6200 or Radeon 9600)

Laptop (Windows Vista + SP1):
CPU: 2ghz Pentium4 Processor or Amd Athlon 2400+ Processor
RAM: 2 GB of RAM
GPU: 128mb Video Card (GeForce Go 6200 or Radeon 9600)

IF your computer does not pass the system requirement, then you cannot play sims3 in your computer.

I hope this helps. Thank you for using fixya

Please leave your comment and ratings. Thanks

CARLO

ASUS M3N78-VM motherboard Problemes

Good Motherboard...BTW... Reset BIOS to Factory defaults. Make sure you have the latest BIOS as well. Then you need to eliminate the other devices. Try running just on the On-Board Video...see if crashes. Run w 2 Gig Ram...same same... and of course the processor which may be impossible. Once you know it is MB or CPU... you make a choice which to buy or test. MB first... you can always return with less stress.

FREEZE

this happens if the rams are of different frequencies have a check with the both the ram frequency ...
if they are different then remove 1 ram ....
& try increasing the virtual memory in the OS ...
if you are using the windows xp .. then to increase the virtual memory just go to
control panel >system>advanced>advanced>virtual memory settings>increase the virtual memory for the drive in which the os is installed ....
increase nearly to the double of the ram memory you use ....

this solves your problem ..

KM4M-L and graphics cards/memory queries

I would hate to burst the bubble but if you buy any DDR2 memory, then you will be wasting your money.
This motherboard only supports standard DDR upto 333mhz and only 2gig max of that.

Video card wise, then an ATI 9800 Pro can be had cheaply or an nVidia 6800 AGP version can be purchased new.

Hope it helps =)
