Has anyone had good results with added a sub to the these speakers. The logical choice I suppose would be the subs from the Vandersteen but I was hoping to keep the price to around $500. Thanks.
I'm using a Velodyne FSX-12 (12" woofer with a servo mechanism), which is by all accounts a very good sub, with my Vandy 1C's. The jury's still out on how well they integrate because I've had the sub less than a month and I'm still fiddling with the filter settings and sub volume controls. Besides, I'm forced to use speaker-level connections through the sub's crossover, which is not the most desirable connection. Moreover, my room is very sparsely furnished and unless I'm very careful reverberation is a problem.
The FSX-12 is discontinued and available for as little as $500 new, which is a fantastic bargain.
One thing I can say for sure is that the Velodyne is very musical. It does not, IMO, produce bloated and ill-defined bass at all. The Vandy's go down to the low 40's and the extra octave made available by the sub makes a world of a difference.
For HT applications, this may not be the best sub because of the servo and possibly because of the limited woofer excursion. Other subs may produce much more visceral impact.
I would strongly second what another poster said. DO NOT use the Vandy's without the Vandersteen or the Sound Anchor stands. These stands make the bass very taut and well-defined. The best $100 upgrade for the Vandy's that's possible. If you're not using stands, buy them before you even consider a sub.

Using a Vandy sub will produce the most seemless match, but I used two different NHT subs with my Vandy 1C's with pretty good results. Models were SW2 and SW3 with the outboard amps.
They are out of production now, but can be found used, and are very good.

Last year, I bought a pair of 1C's w/ stands, then spent a good bit of time auditioning subs. I wanted to buy a VAndy 2WQ but it was too problematic to integrate it w/ my Denon 3801 receiver, so I bought a SVS 25-31PC sub for $699.00. This an incredible system for the total cost. I use it primarily for music but it does very well in my HT environment w/ the Vandy VCC-1 center speaker. IF $699.00 is too much to spend then I'd look at some of the discounted and discontinued very good subs out there. Also, the HSU VTF-2 $499.00 gets very reviews. I have a folder that contains brochures and notes on all of the subs I auditioned. If I find it I'll post some of the results of my observations.
If you aren't using the Vandy stands or Sound Anchor stands you are missing a lot of the sonic capabilities of the Vandy 1C's. Buy them before buying a sub.

Harmon Kardon subwoofer popping and crackeling during play and when just sitting while turned on (the kind were the speaker is directed to the floor). This started after attaching the sound system to new flat screen TV. I did clean off dust and spider webbing from the speaker prior to set up. There is also a loose screw that holds the wire conection where it attaches from the speaker to the reciever. I removed this but it still pops often and loadly
