You can fix it running following procedures.

  1. Open a command prompt.
  2. regsvr32 /u wuaueng.dll (just copy and paste then hit enter)
  3. del C:\WINDOWS\SOFTWAREDISTRIBUTION (just copy and paste then hit enter)
  4. del C:\WINDOWSUPDATE.log (if this tells you that it is in use just go to the next step).
  5. Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
  6. Net start wuauserv
  7. Wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow
There you go, you should be able to request Windows Updates and they will download and install as you expect.

Have you tried letting the pc update itself rather than you doing it manually? Go to Start/All Programs/Windows Update and update that way.

Update Windows XP Until 2019

If you desire to keep updating windows XP with new updates until 2019 there a new work around to that, simple create a new key entry like this Installed = dword 00000001 in the following registry path "HKEY LOCAL MACHINE - SYSTEM - WPA - PosReady" restart your machine and windows will start receiving the firsts new updates since April 2014. The trick is in making windows updates believe that you machine is running POS2009 that use XP Pro as base and is subject to updates until 2019.

Automatic updates won't work

First, access the "Windows Update" service and stop it at "Start-Run-type 'services.msc'.. Next, create a new directory "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.old", then move the
contents of "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" into that folder (cut &
paste), and then trying "Windows update" again. Running Windows Update should create new, uncorrupted contents for the directory.

(Sometimes it's easier to rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder to "SoftwareDistribution.old", then create a new one with the same name in the same C:\Windows location.)
