Make sure you are not using a cover or protector that covers the device innappropiately. Check with the manufacturer, about a possible defect with the device or battery.

Teneale,

I tlooks as if possibly you might have a defective unit. I did some research and you wouldn't be the only one. Either that or maybe try a diffrent USB port, maybe even a usb to wall outlet charger....see if that works. If not I would say its defective.

My music player does'nt work.Only works when charged.

Hi!

Bad news. The battery inside your device is defective.

Now you have to decide: let the battery to be replaced or get a new player. I think it will be better to get a new device.

Hi, i was charging my NW-HD5 with a different charger and left it for many hours. The device was charging properly however when i returned the device had stopped working altogether and won't even switch on...

well, i dont have an NW-HD5 player, but an atrac ad, which is pretty similar, i think. i solved the same problem by putting out the battery, charge it just for a minute without! the battery and turned it on in the meantime, then unplug it, put the battery back inside, charge it again with battery and turn it on, NOT by pressing the "play"-button, but by pressing the "search-menu"-button. and i think now i always have to press the "search-menu"-button to turn it on, otherwise the same error will occure. well, good luck!

IPod Won't Charge

I am assuming that this is the First Gen iPod Touch. My friend had this problem and the way that I fixed it for him is to drain the battery completely, so that it won't turn on. (Even the display shouldn't turn on and say VERY LOW BATTERY with a charge icon).
Plug it into the WALL SOCKET and charge it for 24-48 hours.
If this doesn't work, then the battery is defect. If it is still in Warrenty. Visit the Genius Bar in any apple store and see what they can do

Turn it on: if it will stay powered up, hold down on the pad, and hold the back button at the same time: This will turn the device off, thus possibly fixing the problem. (for the record, holding up on the pad while pressing back will reboot the device, but I find this sometimes does not want to take, like in the situation you are having)

I may also suggest plugging it into any give USB port, letting it try to charge again, then, when you unplug it, do the reboot or turn off commands as described above.

Hope that this helps: I would think the system is off, since you say it "turned off" on you, and now when you start it up you get the "i need a charge" battery, but knowing how my 80 gig acts sometimes, it may THINK it is shutting of when it is not.

sandisk recommends 3+ hours for the initial charge and then about 1.5 - 2 hours for after the battery is drained. More information is needed to diagnose this problem. but here is some info.
