Question about Kenwood VR-307 Receiver

1 Answer

Rear speakers won't play sound.

I ran the sound test and found all channels are producing sound, but when I play dvds that have 5.1 sound nothing plays out of the rear channels. i have a single red cable as part of a rca cable leaving the digital audio output on my dvd player and am sending it into the digital audio video 3 input on the back of the kenwood receiver. the light shows it is playing dolby digital and the Front left, right, center and subwoofer are all working, just not the rear. Any ideas?

Check on the front of the unit for a speaker selector- make sure A & B is selected

SOURCE: Connecting Powered Subwoofer to a Receiver

you will need a line-level converter to use this subwoofer- it is a rectangular-shaped box with wires coming out on one end and red-and-white RCA plugs one the other. The end with the wires coming out will hook to the receiver, and the other end will need to plug into the sub.

Have you set speaker setup configuration to SUBWOOFER YES? Also check SUBWOOFER OUT ON/OFF button on the front panel.

You don't say if you've configured the Receiver to know you have a subwoofer (under Multicontrol - SUBW YES). Unless it knows about the Sub it won't send anything out that single "preout". You can get an RCA splitter to run that single output to both inputs in the Sub.

Just as an experiment, temporarily run one a pair of cables from the REC OUT to the Sub's inputs and tune an FM station to prove the Sub amplifier is alive. If it's still silent, it's dead. If there is sound (muffled) you need to go back to the Receiver to figure out why the Sub Preout is signal-starved.

I've had my Denon AVR-2308CI receiver for 3 years and last week I turned it on to watch a movie and there is no sound coming from my rear speakers? I have a 5 speaker set up (3 in front and 2 in the rear)...

On the front display of the unit, you should have indicator icons that light up if a speaker is being used. Are there only 3 speakers lite up, or are there 5? As a quick check, make sure your speaker connections are secure, and then make sure your surround mode is set to a 5 channel surround mode. 5 channel Stereo is a good one to test with. Also, you can hit the "test" button to see if the speakers are connected and working, it will give a test signal out of each speaker independently. Let me know what you find, and I can answer more.

STR-DE835. White noise coming ferom right rear speaker when DVDs are played. Twise the word "PROTECT" has been displayed.

IF any other source plays fine with the RR speaker, and IF it only happens with the DVD player and IF you're using the 5.1 analog audio feeds to the STR, maybe the audio on that channel is **** from the player. You could prove that by temporarily swapping the RR input from the DVD to any other channel input and test it at a medium level.

If it stays with the DVD RR output, the player or the cable would be suspect. Swap in a different cable and make sure it is not routed uniquely near any sources of magnetic fields, motors, UV or track lights, etc.

---

If you're using digital input all that advice was a waste of time to create as there is nothing external to the chipset that could affect one input channel. Try a different digital input on the STR.

Speaker output doesnt work

Hi when using surround sound its important to understand that not all soundtracks have a "rear channel' meaning that the rear speakers will not always produce sound. In fact the rear channels may only produce sound about 10% of the time.

Your receiver has a "test tone" which sends a tone sound through the 5 speakers you should turn the speakers up or down so that all 5 speakers produce about the same volume.

The speakers of course will have a different sound to them depending on the brand and model but just try to balance it as much as possible.

Should also point out that you need to start out with at minimum a STEREO signal and that it needs to be connected with good quality cables. If possible use the optical inputs or HDMI which is a digital signal but not all receivers have that capability.

Lastly play around with the settings Dolby is of course the standard but many receivers have Neo or other proprietary surround formats which may produce the desired effect.

Hope that helps

If you have diffrent mode's on your system like---
3ch,pro logic, and or live, hall pavilion, try setting them@pro logic first.then if you have DSP mode that increases the rear effect the higher the number the stronger the effect.

Rear Surround speakers

Best thing to do is to put the unit in 5 channel or 7 channel mode. That will send left ch information to the front left and rear left speakers ( both will get the same information). Ditto with the right channel. The center channel will get centre channel information.

If all the speakers work, go out and rent TOP GUN. ( yes its old), BUT there are a few extreme scenes , one of which is the elevator scene, where the camera changes perspective and suddenly you hear the elevator doors close BEHIND you through only the surround speakers ( have the unit in surround mode....NOT 5 or 7 ch mode ). If this works ok, then you have no problems.

Remember, surround sound only produces information in the rear channels when the information is there. To check out the digital and DTS decoders, get an action flick. If you can, get a remote too, because that will unlock many features about the receiver that you cant get to with the front panel controls. Also go to yamaha and download the owners manual ( its free !!).....that should get you going.....

best of luck...

NAD T762 - no sound

Try reseating the prologic/output board. Second one from the right (from the front of the reciever), that fixed my no sound problems on many channels. You will have to take out a few screws to remove and reseat it, and while you are at it clean the connections.
