Question about Diablo 2 Collector's Edition
The main menu comes u and everything, but pressing play makes it go black, and i have to shut down by the button on my computers case because i can do anything, the computer itself is 2 years old and is a great gaming computer, could diablo just be so old that it wont work?
Try a fresh install of the game.
Completely un-install the old one first and then reinstall.
Should remedy your problem.

Tips for a great answer:
Let us first download and install the patch for this game and then try playing and check if it works.
Here is the link to download the patch.
If you are unable to play the game or install the patch perform the below steps.
a. Click start and type msconfig in search bar and press enter.
b. Select boot.
c. Go to Advanced options.
d. Place a checkmark on Check maximum memory and increase it to the maximum.
e. click ok and the apply and ok again.
Try playing the game in clean boot state and check if it works.

Note: When the troubleshooting is over do not forget to reset the computer to normal startup. Follow the step 7 in the above article.
