Question about Sony Handycam DCR-HC20 Mini DV Digital Camcorder
I've had a sony dcr-hc20 for 4.5 years and it's worked fine. Last week the lcd went black but the view finder still worked. Now the lcd works again but is real blurry. Thought it might be the ccd problem I've read about but the lcd is blurry with tapes I made 4 years ago when I play them back. Audio is works fine.
This does not sound like a CCD problem yet, but a LCD problem. This would require you to replace the LCD screen. Sounds like the LCD inverter is shot. That is the power supply that is required to back light your LCD.
Before we blame that, you should make sure that all ribbon cables are secure and tight.
Good luck !

Go to https://eservice.sony.com/webrma/web/specialrma.do. Sony had CCD problems and are offering a fix for $15 S&H. You can run the test they describe to determine if it applies to your problem.

Tips for a great answer:
Sounds like a sensor problem. I recently called Sony with a similar problem for my own mini DV cam. They will give you a repair cost estimate and tell you how to send it to the company for repairs. They are also refurbishing my cam, besides replacing lens and sensors. It's worth the cost to avoid having to purchase a new camera. I have 7 or 8 Sony DV cams for my media business, and this is the only time sending one in for repairs.
The number as listed on the Sony website: Priority Service Line (for U.S. only): 239-768-7547. Once you wade through the maze of recorded menu options, and get to Camcorder Repair service department, they will help you very efficiently.

The most likely cause for this is a damaged or defective flexible ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the camera body and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.
