Self cleaning oven door lock is stuck and buzzing

My daughter opened the oven door near the end of the self cleaning stage and now the latch does not move back. The oven door buzzes when opened and there is smoke coming from the top of the control panel, as if something is overheating. We ran the cleaning cycle for another two hours and when it was done, the latch still did not switch back. Can I still use the oven until we get a repairman in? Does it sound like the locking mechanism is broken? The range is about five years old and is a Whirlpool Gold from Sears

You can still use the oven i would gt someone out as soon as you can to get the lock released but yes you can still use the oven

My old Westinghouse range self-clean oven door latch is in the locked position with the door open. The door cannot close with the latch in the way. The clock is making a buzzing sound.


The first question I have for you is, how did the latch even come out in the first place? Normally the latch comes out ONLY when the oven has been set to cleaning mode.
The buzzing noise is probably there because the oven 'thinks' it has completed the cleaning or that the latch is out.
you may have to take the door off the oven and remove the inner cover to see if there is a way to get the latch to retract. Otherwise, call a professional to come take a look at it.

Locked latch on the self cleaning oven


try wiggling the door latch to get it open if not try the cleaning process, if that works, and see if the door comes unlatched and the light goes off. if not the lock light switch is stuck and it will need to be taken apart and cleaned

it is locked the leaver has become detached from the door latch and even though the leaver moves the lock part doesn't have you tried it lately push in on the door and try to move the leaver if that doesn't work get a wire coat hanger make a Small hook and from the left hand side see if you can snag the hook and pull it over ive done that before theopen end of the hook should point up start just abve the door gasket about halfway over well i cant reamber which way the latch moves but im sure you can figure it out push slighty in on the door after you hook the latch but try to open it fist some have asensor that wont let the oven door open till its cool enough to be safe let me know
