In many cases, the 20gb Classic and Photo models have problems with the Hard Drive. I have found over time, if you open the iPod, and remove the hard drive from the cable, remove the cable from the board and assemble it back together in reverse the problem will go away. The ipod cables tend to seat and don't make good contact.
to open your ipod, lay it on it's metal back, slide a guitar pick down the side between the metal case and the plastic front. slide it up and down the length of the ipod.do the same to the top and bottom. it should pop open. Up near the headphone jack and switch the is a cable attached, be careful not to open the ipod to fast, use a guitar pick to pry up the cable from the mother board and that will expose the inside. Now to remove the hard drive hold the black tab on the hard drive cable and pull the hard drive free straight back from the cable. To free the cable from the motherboard, lift the black lever clip up and open. now look at the cable end. If it is v shaped, straighten it and reinsert it in the motherboard and puc the black clip flat again. reassemble the ipod and give it a try.

Try this reset solution: First, toggle the hold switch back and foward and put it back in the off position. Then press and hold the center button and the menu button simultaneously for about six second until the apple logo appears on the screen. Then release the buttons and it should work just like normal. Hope this helps.

Well, when the exclamation mark and file folder show on the screen together, that means that there is a corrupt file on the ipod or the ipod can not read any information from the hard drive. It may be because the hard drive may be cracked. Try connecting it to a computer and see if it shows up in itunes. If it does, try clicking on the restore button and see if that works. If it does not, or it does not show up in itunes, then you will need to get your hard drive serviced at a repair shop.

My 8GB IPod touch won't turn on at all. I've tried the whole power and home button pushing stuff but still nothing. Can anyone help me?

Hi Amanda,
This may take a little trial and error, but it has worked for me in the past. Press down the refresh button on the top edge of you IPOD and the back/Menu button on the front of your IPOD at the same time and hold them compressed until the Apple logo appears. It may take up to a minute or more before it resets. You may also have to do it more than once. Oh and make sure it has been charged. Hope this helps! I was just using my ipod, and the screen went white... I tried the menu/center button but nothing happened.

Turn the touch off and turn it on again.

If the iPod will not turn off, try to reset it. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until either the Apple logo or battery symbol appears. If the battery symbol appears, continue to charge iPod touch until it is fully charged.

If this doesn't work, try restoring the iPod

Turning off IPOD 1059

If your iPod is frozen or won't turn on, it may be because iPod is paused or the Hold switch is in the locked position. If so, a lock symbol appears on the screen. Slide the Hold switch to the unlocked position and check the screen.
  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
To reset iPod, iPod (scroll wheel), iPod (touch wheel), and iPod (dock connector) ipodg1-2.gif ipodg3.gif
  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons simultaneously until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Center (Select) button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.
When you reset iPod all your music and files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. Date and time are preserved (unless the iPod reset itself because it had no power and then was reconnected to power). Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, On-The-Go Playlists, Shuffle, Backlight timer, and so forth are preserved from the last time the hard drive turned on.
