I have a first gen ipod nano (Although a similar problem happend to my 2nd gen nano too) the ipod freezes very frequently. it ALWAYS freezes whenever the ipod is bumped or shaken the tiniest bit. im assuming there is a problem with the hard drive freezing up or something. ive restored the ipod and all that stuff, but is there any way to fix the hard drive itself without it being replaced

It sound likes your ipod is having a memory problem. Try restoring the ipod you will use all the music on it so you may want to back it up first. Restore the ipod using itunes then look for any updates add music and try it again in your car. If it does not work then your ipod will need to be repaired.
One option is to take the iPod into an Apple retail store Genius Bar and have a technician look at it, and if it is still under warranty, they can replace the iPod for you if it is not fixable.
If its not under warranty, Apple doesn't replace batteries, but you can find replacement batteries online, and depending on where you live you can probably find a shop that will install it for you if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. I don't believe Best Buy replaces batteries though.
Press and hold the center button while holding down the menu button. This will reboot your Ipod. Check your IPod cable to see if its shorted. If might have transferred a song and crash in the middle of the transfer.
