Question about Canon PIXMA MP830 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Canon MP830/MP Navigator won't scan properly

This problem seems to appear if you have gone from Windows XP to Windows Vista.
My computer got very infected with over 250 viruses (I'm convinced due to "Limewire") anyway I had to get a new computer and I have found that now my scanner on the Canon MP830 will not scan properly, even though when plugging in, it automatically installed what was required (or so I thought) The solution, go to www.canon.com.au (if in the Pacific Region) or www.canon.com , run your mouse over Support, then click on "Driver Downloads". In the "Enter model name of your canon product" type MP830, then click the small go button to the right. Click on the first link, then click on "Drivers/Support". In the setup box, click Driver Downloads. Now a second window will appear, in this window you need two of the downloads, the first being number 5. MP830mp Driver Ver.1.10 (windows vista,xp,2000) click on this then scroll down until you see a small box saying "I have read and understood the information above", tick this box. Now a red "download" appears; click on this. So it is easy to find, save to desktop. Now click the back button and follow the same steps to download number 7. MPNavigator Ver.2.22.
At this stage you may want to turn on your printer and re-start your computer. Now double click on the mp830vst1 icon on your desktop and follow procedure. After this is done then double click on the mpnmp830 icon and follow procedure. You should then re-start your computer and hopefully like me; it now scns correctly. Good luck

How do I scan a document?

Do you have the full software installed or just the basic driver from Canon? What OS are you using? http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp240#DriversAndSoftware has the software and drivers. If you installed the OS driver, you should uninstall that, disconnect the data cable and then install the driver from Canon. The generic OS driver usually only runs the printer.

Place the document face down on the scanner glass or face up if you have an ADF. Check that the all-in-one and the computer have good bi-directional communication. (Direct USB connection (if you are using that), replace cables if the printer works but not the scanner and the Canon software is installed.)

If you are using the Canon software, you need to set up the destinations for the buttons and have the monitoring software running. Thus start scanning from the computer at first. Launch MP Navigator and then click on the type of document you want to scan. Find the resolution and contrast that works for you. Use these in setting the button defaults (see the manual from Canon). Then click Scan.

Alternately, with Windows XP, Vista and Win7, you can scan with software that came with the OS. Paint is available on all of these OS versions (File > Import from camera scanner > from scanner). Vista includes PhotoGallery which works like Paint (this can be downloaded for XP and Win7). Vista and Win7 also can scan with Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan).

When you have the MP Navigator properly set up, you will be able to launch a scan from the printer. Press the Scan button and the software will launch.

I hope this helps.

It just won't scan. It prints fine and it photocopies fine but if I go on to scan and choose any of the scanning options it says "Place document on platen glass and press ()" (i tried to draw the button...

Hey Yasmin,

I had the same problem.

I installed the MP Navigator (MP Navigator Ver. 3.03 (Windows 7/7 x64/Vista/Vista64/XP/XP x64/2000/Me/98) from the canon website (http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0900173112.html) and then I released the scannerlock (http://www.fixya.com/support/t5363070-trace_release_scanner_lock)
and then I could scan! Not only through the printer itself by pressing the (<I>) button but also through the MP Navigator program. When I pressed the (<I>) button on the printer, the scanned document would be automatically saved on the computer in a folder of MP Navigator.

Hope this helps you!

My Canon MP510 scanner won't scan - the printer works fine, but I can't get it to scan. It used to work just fine.

Try using your scanner from your computer, I'm using windows XP and when i go to My Computer and the printer is connected i see a section that says Scanner and Cameras, your printer should be there, click on it and follow the easy step to scan a document.

When i scan the images are black and white not color

Reset the device when it is not functioning properly. If the device is not functioning properly or to clear memory, reset it.
  1. On the operator panel, press and hold the <ON/OFF> button for one second. (The display will go blank.)
Note: It may be necessary to unplug the power cord if pressing the ON/OFF button does not shut off the printer.
  2. Wait approximately ten seconds and then press the <ON/OFF> button again.
  3. Wait until the device has completed its cycling process before submitting another job request.

Selecting a Response to Commands from the Operation Panel
You can specify a response resulting from pressing the <Color Start> or <Black Start> button on the machine. Setting the response with MP Navigator allows you to scan documents easily.
Important:
With network connection, only MP Navigator can be launched. Configure the settings accordingly.
With USB connection, with Windows XP, the program selection dialog box will be displayed the first time you press the <Color Start> or <Black Start> button on the machine, as shown below. Select 'MP Navigator', select the 'Always use this program for this action' checkbox, and then click 'OK'. By specifying this setting, selecting any scan mode launches MP Navigator, and the selected action will be performed.

1. Click the Windows 'Start' button, then click 'Control Panel' (Non-Windows XP: click the 'Start' button, then click 'Settings' -> 'Control Panel').

2. In the resulting window, click 'Printers and Other Hardware', then click (or double-click) 'Scanners and Cameras'.

3. Right-click the scanner icon for the machine, then click 'Properties'.

4. On the 'Events' tab, in 'Actions', specify the setting to launch MP Navigator. Specify 'MP Navigator Ver2.1' for 'Select an event' and for all events. (Windows 98/Windows 2000: Select an event in 'Scanner events' and specify 'MP Navigator Ver2.1' for 'Send to this application'.) If the settings are already configured to launch MP Navigator, click 'Cancel' to exit.

Setting actions for the <Color Start> and <Black Start> buttons with MP Navigator

Mp navigator 2.2

The sticker on the box was added on (the MP830 came out a year before Windows Vista came out) and indicates that the hardware is Windows Vista certified. You can download Vista compatible drivers and MP Navigator here. (MP Navigator is under the Software heading, once you select the OS.)
