This was an excellent description on the repair. I have a craftsman 17 horse 42in cut that floods the crankcase as well. Do you think the fix coupd be the same on my mower? I bought this as is from a friend that had the carb rebuilt, but nothing replaced, the guy just took it apart and cleaned it an reassembled it. I am thinking that the solenoid is faulty on the bottom of the bowl. Also, is the fuel shut off a good idea to prevent any syphening of fuel when it is off? Just a thought. thanks.. 1. If it has a metal tank, then it may have rust in the tank which is getting into the carb(s). Look in the tank and see if there is any rust at all. If it has rust then a tank liner kit should be installed like "Kreem". "Kreem" or other brand liner kits are sold at most motorcycle shops.

2. The carb could have trash or rust in it. Remove the carb inlet line and blow litely into the inlet hose.

3. It most likely hydrolocked because the carb bowl overflowed when the trash or rust made the needle and seat stick open. The rubber breather tube shot out most likely because the vapors in the crankcase ignited or there is to much oil and gas in the crankcase now. Once the carb overflowing is stopped, the oil should be changed.

Oil leaking into carb

All Harleys will get a little oil in the breather.

However, when mileage causes the rings to wear, combustion pressure can leak past the rings, causing higher pressure.

You didn't state your mileage, but at 11 years old, your engine might be ready for a top end rebuild.

Breather tube throwing oil into carb

Oil coming via the engine breather can mean a worn engine, it could be as simple as an over filled sump, or the breather valve itself is not working, the breather valve allows the crankcase pressure out of the engine.

Briggs & Stratton Vertical OHV Engine 18 hp blowing white smoke engine run great but a lot of smoke and also have oil being spit out of the black hose that come from engine to the carb.

Check your oil.

If it is overfilled, milky, or smells like gas. Your going to need to change that ASAP. It sounds like the float has stuck in the past or is still sticking, and it has flooded the crankcase with gas, which has mixed with the oil. And because it is overfilled it comes through the breather hose into the carb. This also explains the smoke most probably because the oil is spewing in the carb through the breather and being burned.

Your oil breather (on the side of the engine opposite the carb) may be malfunctioning/defective allowing the carb to **** oil from it. There is a breather tube that crosses over the top of the cylinder connecting the crankcase( oil) breather to the air filter housing. Check the oil level and the condition of the air filter and esp. the oil breather. It serves the same function as a PCV on a car engine.

I had the same problem! I found that the needle valve in the carb was not shutting off the fuel flow when not running. Either replace needle valve or put a shut off valve in the fule line. Should take care of the problem

TRACTOR BLEW WHITE SMOKE, AND STARTS TO SPUTTER

Start with making sure your oil lever is not over full. If it is it may be getting into the crankcase breather hose that goes to the carburetor hence the white smoke. Sometimes also you can blow a gasket in the breather system and it will do the same. Check for oil leaks in the breather system. Hope this helps. donnyb60

Oil blows out of tube

You either have a head gasket going bad or your piston rings are shot which causes air to go down into the crankcase building up pressure which exits through the breather tube.

Blowing oil on an 8HP craftsman snowblower

That is a breather tube, I can't picture the motor off the top of my head but that tube is either connected to the valve cover or if the tube seems to go up over the motor then that tube goes down into the motor. If it's the one thats connected to the valve cover then it's possible there is to much oil in the valve box. If it's the one that seems to go up over the top and in then if your just alittle to much over full you'll get oil out of that tube cause that tube sits alittle above the oil level. If your oil level is right on the line then I would run it for a bit then check the oil level. If the level is still good then you should be ok but keep an eye on it if it continues to blow oil out I would take it in to get looked at futher.
