Question about Dell Dimension 8200 PC Desktop

Dell Dimemsion 8200 Won't Boot - Beeping Sequence 5-2-2-1

I try to upgrade my memory(RDRAM) from 512MB to 1GB(Non-ECC) in pairs. Install 512MB(ECC) by mistake. PC won't boot or post; put out beeping 5-2-2-1 and back panel LEDs are green, yellow, yellow, yellow. This mean ''memory not detected''. Went back to original memory configuration(took new RAM out). PC still won't boot and still put out beep 5-2-2-1. I think BIOS/mobo didn't like the new memory and won't boot but is now stuck in that state no matter what I do. Try to reset BIOS by removing the coin battery but it didn't work. How can I clear theBIOS/NVRAM or whatever so it will recognize the memory as what it was before which is good?

TIA

Often simply disconnecting the power cable, holding power button for 15 seconds, release power button, plug back in will work

Otherwise remove CMOS battery and perform above operation

Hope it works

Dell Precision 530 with dual Xeon CPUs. Uses Rambus memory. (4) 256mb ECC modules are installed. It should be a total of 1 gb. However, BIOS only shows 256mb total even though it shows all 4 rambus...

It sounds like like you have multiple issues. When all memory slots are filled with 256 sticks the computer boots but only sees 256 MB instead of 1 gig.
When you install the Crimms it won't boot at all.
You may have an open circuit on one of the Crimms.
As for the computer seeing only 256 MB you may have a bad memory slot on the motherboard.
Here's a link regarding Direct Rambus DRAM or DRDRAM (sometimes just called Rambus DRAM or RDRAM: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RDRAM

I just need to upgrade the memory on a Dell Precision 530MT.. can't seem to find the exact type of memory it needs.. any ideas?

HELLO Paul

When installing memory modules in the system board sockets and not using the optional memory riser boards, observe the following guidelines:
  • Each memory socket on the system board must be occupied either by a RIMM or a CRIMM.

  • Memory sockets must be upgraded in matched pairs. In other words, two sockets in a pair must contain modules of identical capacity, number of components, and speed. See "System Board Memory Components" to identify pairs of sockets.

  • Mixed pairs of ECC and non-ECC modules all function as non-ECC.

  • Be sure to install a RIMM in socket 1 first (closest to the processor) before installing modules in the other sockets.

  • The system board supports PC600 and PC800 memory modules.

I want to add more ram. Where do I get it? Dell

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, so don't 'Shoot the Messenger'!

The Dell Dimension 8200 Desktop PC uses RDRAM ram memory.
VERY expensive stuff!

Supporting Data:
This is Dell Support, Manuals, and the Dimension 8200 Service Manual,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8200/

Scroll down the list to the heading - Specifications, and left-click on it.

Scroll the page down until you come to the heading - Memory
Now look at the first subheading - Architecture
RDRAM

You have 4 ram memory slots. (memory connectors)

EACH, ram memory slot can support up to a Maximum amount, of 512MB. (512 MegaBytes)

TOTAL Maximum Amount for your computer is 2GB. (Not shouting)

1024MB = 1GB. (1024 MegaBytes = 1 GigaByte)

The type of Rdram ram memory is PC800, and it is Non-ECC.

(Error Correcting Control, or also stated as Error Correcting Code.
Used mostly for Server computers. Your computer does not use ECC ram memory)

In My Humble Opinion, (And again, don't shoot the messenger), it would be better money spent to buy a decent affordable computer, than it would be to upgrade the ram memory in this computer.

This statement is based upon the fact that the Dell Dimension 8200 ships with 128MB's of ram memory.
(Makes it a pretty slow computer. Rdram or not)

The average cost to install, for example, 1GB of ram memory is OUTLANDISH! (Not shouting)

Example 1:

http://www.4allmemory.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.memorySearch&model_id=24927

Example 2:

http://www.pcmemorystore.com/Dell-Dimension-8200-ram.htm

For about another $100 you can buy a pretty decent new desktop computer, that will run the one you have in circles.

Just my thoughts.

Looking for the manual for a Gateway 700S PC. Specifically 2 questions ... 1) how do I open the ATX tower case? and 2) what EXACT memory specs do i need to upgrade this unit from the 256MB that it came...

Hello,
for the memory upgrade, your system used RDRAM RIMMS.
it supports the following memory modules (which must be installed in pairs).

and as for opening the case, you there should just be ~2 screws on the side panel away from the motherboard ports that you can remove and it will slide off, or there might be 1 or 2 thumb screws.

some systems require ECC it may be as simple as obtaining ECC Ram......u can try checking the memory that cam with it to see whether it is buffered and ECC if it is you will have to obtain same type of RAM

Hi

You likely have a bad memory module. First, try removing all the memory and putting it back in again. This is called reseating. If you still get the errors, then try removing one stick at a time and testing it with each stick (provided, of course, you have more than one stick installed). If you only have one stick installed, remove it and turn on the computer and it should beep at you as well. That memory stick will need to be replaced.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate this solution as fixya. Thank you.

did you try to install one stick then see if it boots if it does move that one stick to all the different slots to see if you have a faulty slot and then see if you have a faulty stick by rotating them
