I have a similar problem. I have a 24in. Mongoose Blackcomb mountain bike, the gears tend to either jump each other when shifting or the dial reads one number when in fact the chain will be on a different gear. It has been adjusted but I wish there was some sort of website with step-by-step instructions on how to properly adjust the gears. Help! :)

1. oil it
2. on the back of the bike there is a place where the chain rolls and you can push it forward... take the chain off then back on.
3. make sure you pedal fast to get it off. Hope this Helps

Get the kind that has a lever shift instead of the grip shifter. The plastic part that holds the spring breaks easily. The lever shifter has been going strong on my bike for 6 years without a problem

Personally, here in AUS bikes brought from Wallmart type department stores are very general purpose, meaning not professional, so the price doesn't hold in fact depreciates quite quickly so if you want to know for selling purposes than ask google, eBay, Amazon with words like used whether or not it has been, like unwanted gifts.

If I had to guess I'de say anywhere between $60 and $90 at best, but please feel free to do your own investigation and good luck.

When i shift to 2nd gear and let off it shifts back on its own

Travis:
Put the rear derailleur into second gear and stop the bike before it shifts back down. Look carefully at the derailleur and you will see two small screws next to each other. These are stop screws. The stop screw for high gear may be out of adjustment, or the front derailleur is out of alignment putting sideways torsion on the chain forcing the chain to drop back into first gear.

Mongoose hill toper mountain bike how to adjust the gears

Use this link for instructions. It is best if you have your bike on a bike stand. If you don't have a bike stand then you can put it upside down with a towel under it. Make sure that none of the wires are being pinched while either in the stand or while upside down.

How does the gears work on the mongoose xr500 moutain bike

There are search engines that will find the answer so much faster than flushing this through Fixya.

There is nothing unique to Mongoose regarding shifting.

Use your favorite search engine and look for "how to shift gears on a bike". You will find many videos.
