XP-Pro Crash Since downloding service pack 3, I've been getting cpu crashes while working the internet. First, input to keyboard freezes and a a few seconds later the screen displays ''going to sleep. The fan still runs. Recovery is by switching OFF at the tower back and back ON again. I operate with AOL-9.0, which might be the problem Bill

    Reply to SubliMation: Thanks.

    I mentioned sp-3 only because the cpu crash began after installing sp-3, which was back in Nov. 08. I've had no other problem as you mentioned with sp-3, although I haven't recognized any benefits of sp-3 either. I must have more than a dozen stored "Restores" since then and it would be a guess to select one. (I regularily defrag both the system and the registry and part of each is a back-up.). I have ruled out CPU overheat as the problem because the CPU crash only happens while operating on Internet. Sometimes I can be on Internet for hours without a crash,

I don't know why but some systems which have XP (SP1 or SP2) simply can't take the upgrade to SP3. Your system appears to be one of them. For instance our family's computer had XP SP2 and upon upgrading to SP3 we received a fatal crash while XP was loading into normal operating mode.

I managed to resolve the issue by booting to safe mode and restoring the system to a date before I installed SP3. Sorry that the new SP doesn't work for you.

Here is what I do whenever I come across one that crashes. shuts down, freezes and what not. I clean out a lot of junk files, run scans, and clean the inside of the PC itself. all the unnecessary, temp internet files, and cookies (use disk cleanup, or if you have any other computer maintenance programs with one.) Check for viruses, spyware, malware, adware, and bots. They can run in the background and multiply their processing tasks, therefore hogging all your CPU and RAM and causing these issues. I suggest Spyware Doctor and/or Spyboy S&D, Kaspersky and/or Norton. You can get Spyware doctor for free by downloading it in the google pack (go to google and search google pack), and Spybot S&D is free. Another thing that can be done also is to clean the inside of your PC. You wouldn't believe how bad loads of dust and whatnot can affect a PC. I have taken computers that have had similar problems and opened them up and there was dust CAKED on the Motherboard, RAM, in the plugs, fans, and Hard Drives. I clean all of it out and it work 100% better. Dust can carry static charges and cause shorts in your hard ware, so it is important for best performance to keep your PC clean on the inside and in its files.

How to upgrade win 95 to winxp without removing files installed

A computer running Windows 95 WILL NOT RUN Windows XP in most cases. Post all of your hardware details and we can explore that further.

Most programs that run on Windows 95 WILL NOT RUN under Windows XP easily. There are some compatibility things you can try for each one, but most simply will crash, and some will seem to work for a while then crash at inopportune moments.

What you should do is buy an newer computer with Windows XP, remove your current hard drive, and put your current hard drive as a second drive in the new computer. You will have access to your documents, but your programs will not run.

When i am trying to use c++ on my system it is giving me message the NTVDM cpu has encountered an illegal operation

Here is an explanation of what NTVDM is: The NT Virtual DOS Machine (a.k.a WOW, or Windows on Windows), is a Win16 subsystem that runs under Windows NT, which allows 16-bit applications to run as if they were being executed on a DOS machine, with that machine's multitasking and segmented memory model. Because the system is multitasked 16-bit DOS and Windows applications cannot crash NT. However, 16-bit apps within a Win16 subsystem run the exact same way as they do on a DOS/Win 3.x machine; therefore, 16-bit apps within the subsystem can crash one another, or the subsystem. To prevent this, you can launch multiple WOW subsystems as long as your program does not communicate using shared memory. Windows NT will not allow NTVDM to execute instructions that try to directly manipulate hardware or memory locations. As a result, some DOS and Windows 3.x applications (such as games) may not run under Windows NT.

WINDOWS XP PRO SERVICE PACK 3

First off, please use proper case. All upper case makes it look like you are shouting. Thanks.

Try removing everything you can possibly remove from the outside other than the monitor. Remove any cards inside not needed to boot (sound, NIC, modem, etc.).

Disconnect mouse and keyboard, too if it will boot without a keyboard. Some systems will halt at the BIOS screen without a keyboard.

When you have a minimum config for booting, boot and see if it stays on. If so, one of the items disconnected is the culprit.

If not, reconnect keyboard (if disconnected) and boot into Safe mode by tapping F8 after BIOS screen. See if it will stay on in safe mode. If it will stay on in safe mode, problem is O/S.

If it won't stay on in safe mode, see how long it will stay on at the BIOS screen. If it will stay on indefinitely, you could have flaky RAM or possibly hard drive. Power off, unplug power cable, remove hard drive and see if you can boot to the Windows CD. If it will boot up to Starting Windows and stay on, probably not RAM although that is not a definitive test. At that point, I'd try another hard drive and see if the O/S will install or try wiping and reloading the original hard drive.

Let me know if you need more help.

My pc is extremely slow, I have even formatted and instal a new version of Windows Xp service pack 2 to my PC pentium-3 with 256 RAM but there is still no change. Need some one to help me out.

slow pc is the cause of many problems.
1=firstly,use disk cleanup.
2=secondly,regularly defragment your hard disk.
3=thirdly,try to switch over to pentium 4 3.0 Ghz or intel core 2 duo.
4=at last,change your motherboard to ddr2 Ram supporting Board.
