Question about Braun Flex XP II 5790 Electric Shaver

1 Answer

Shaver suddenly stopped working

I have a 6 month old contour 5780 that i purchased from target. i regularly clean and charge it in the base system.

today i removed the razor from the base and when i pressed the start button it worked for about .5 seconds and quit. i took it apart and cleaned it, inspected the circuit board and tried to run it again apart from the body...nothing. it is dead as a dead duck.

i am almost 100% certain that it is charged fully.

did the motor burn out? did the circuit board fry? can i acquire a new one from braun since it is only appx 6 months old?

I had the same problem with mine right after the two year warranty expired.

BUT I FIXED IT!!!

The problem seems to be bad engineering. Apparently the cleaning solution works its way into the circuit board of the shaver.

I took the razor apart (you need very small phillips screwdrivers), there are six screws. First remove the foils, then the blades (just pull them up). Two screws are where the head rotates. after removing the head, there are two more screws underneath the head. There are two more screws on the bottom under plastic caps beside the charging terminal. You can now gently slide the razor's hardware out of the case by pulling up on the head mounting arms while holding the case as you normally would shaving. (This sounds confusing but should be obvious as you do it.)

Looking at the circuit board i noticed some white residue on the board. I gently cleaned the board with small amount of alcohol and q-tips, being careful not to catch any cotton on the components of the board. At this point you can at least confirm that the motor is not burnt out and the batteries are charged by placing a flathead screwdriver between the positive terminal of the battery and the motor. It should come on if the motor and batteries are okay.

Next you hit the reset button at the bottom-front, then see if it comes on using the on/off button. You can do this step with the razor disassembled or assembled.

Hopefully this works for you. Now if only i could figure out a way to clean and refill the cartridges instead of paying $5 for 5 cents worth of cleaning fluid.

I should add that my razor is the braun contour, series 3, 5790.

I think I also had to plug it in before I hit the reset button and turned it on. I can't remember exactly though. It has worked fine since.

The top will not stay down for charging

This is a common problem with the clean/charge base for model 7526. The mechanism inside is broken. You can replace the upper housing that includes the locking arm or you can replace the whole system. Both options are available at shaveroutlet.com. See links below

The locking mechanism in the arm is broken. This is a common problem with your model. To repair it you will need to purchase a replacement part. You will find the part at shaveroutlet.com. See link below

In older models if you leave it plugged in it will ruin the battery. It has to be unplugged after it is charged. Unfortunately it sounds like the battery is bad. Contact a service center to see if the battery can be replaced otherwise you may need to buy a new unit. The newer self cleaning models do not need to be unplugged after cleaning and charging.

Try removing the cord from the clean/charge base and plug the cord directly into the bottom of the shaver. If it charges directly from the cord, it is a safe assumption that the clean/charge base is not working correctly.
This unit is not repairable as the problem is, almost certainly, a faulty circuit board. You will need to purchase a replacement.

Shaver will not charge or clean in the base

All you have to do is take the base apart. Turn it upside down, and there are two plastic clips on the rear portion of the base. Press them in with a key or screwdriver and wiggle the base a bit to remove the inner portion from the outer shell. Make sure you unplug the unit and remove the cleaning cartridge before doing this. Once it is apart, place a small wedge underneath the portion of the electric contact that sticks out to touch the shaver, and press the back of that portion out so that it slightly bends the contact strip and makes it stick out a little further. Then remove the wedge and put the base back together. It will work again, as the contacts can now protrude to touch the shaver and run the cleaning and charging cycle.

the 110 plugin goes into a circuit which changes AC to DC for charging the internal NiCad batteries. If there is NO charge whatsoever in the batteries, the shaver will not work. If you have any electronics background a simple test with a VOM will determine if the bridge rectifier is putting out any DC.[you must disassemble the shaver] If you have no experience on circuits take it to a repair location.

It keeps flashing CHARGE

Return the shaver to the store from which you purchased from. It would appear that one or more of the Ni Cad batteries are no good and will not accept a charge. Have you attempt to plug the charger directly into the shaver? If not, try that and see if the shaver will run. Still your best move is to return the unit to the store as it is still under store return warranty. Dutchman
