Question about Panasonic PT-47WX53 47" Rear Projection HDTV

Adjusting the convergence after replace convergence chips

After replace the convergence amp, there is still a small minor alignment issue at the top and bottom of the screen with the red color, they mostly converge but even the green lines have some curve to them at the top. I used the service manual to enter the service mode and used all the different convergence alignment modes but still have an minor issue. this is still a great improvement over what it was when the chips went out. But that last little part is driving me nuts. Is there any efficient way to align the reds and blue to the green. I bought the alignment template and can see the curves in the lines but can not align them straight. Could there be other parts that need replacement? Hopefully not. Any help would be appreciated. Felix

So if the VA62 generator is not an option, is there a cheap pattern
generator that would work, or another process without using the
generator that could achieve almost the same results. And if using a
pattern generator is the only option, then what. What is the setup and
how would you do the alignment in case I could borrow a pattern
generator. I spend a few hours already using the tv built-in
convergence test. Would you still use the tv built-in convergence
tests to perform the alignment? Thanks for the help so far.

That's it patience. I did start with static and in the course mode, then moved to fine but it is just that last part trying to keep the lines all straight. I guess maybe this weekend I will take another stab at the alignment, there are some many ways you can make the adjustment. I guess it's like tuning a carburetor, once you're done it a bunch of times you just know which combo's to use. Thanks, Felix

Hello fmnii,

Believe it or not the easy part was the replacing of the convergence amplifiers. Now for the hard part, static and dynamic convergence of the TV. To do this, what I usually do is not trust the onboard cross-hatch and alignment patterns, for this I use a signal/pattern generator to create the cross-hatch and alignment patterns. I follow the static convergence instructions first, and then the dynamic convergence instructions. This process taks about 6 - 12 hours (Yes 6 - 12 hours) if done correctly. I say use the instructions because each TV set is different. It sounds like you have your static convergence well in hand and you just need to do the dynamic.

If you can, try to get a signal/pattern generator (I use the VA62A).

I wish you well,

Thank you,

    Hello fmnii,

If you can not get your hands on a generator and decide to use the pattern generator in the tv, that's ok. It's just been my personal experience that the internal generator, if not aligned itself, can "lie". I would only use the internal alignment generator system to do touch up, just call me an old TV guy, but my best results come from using the external generator, and then the internal generator as touch up just to lock the settings into the PROM

You make a good point, but convergence adjustments only involves adjusting the controls found in the service manual (You will have to have this because TVs are different as to how to do the adjustments), The problem is, you have to do these adjustments over and over again until you get the desired effect which is all of the lines are lined up. As I stated, that can take from 6-12 hours

Shops charge from $650.00 - $800.00 to do convergence adjustment, the reason why is it takes so long to do them correctly.

If you have the service manual, read the directions on how to do the static convergence, follow it exactly. Then do the dynamic convergence, but be aware as you do the dynamic convergence it will throw other sections out of alignment, so you have to go back and realign the sections that moved from there original position. It takes patience, and a lot of it.

    I hope this helps,

    Thank you,

Convergence chips can be purchased as a kit for these types of tvs. (G**gle it). The repair is very easy with the kit. Usually comes with two ICs and a couple diodes depending on the kit needed. Just solder them in and you're fixed

Also, you may need to do some minor alignment on your tv once you get the convergence kit installed. This is done on the little small box with phillips head dials (one for each color of tube)

Yes, your Convergence ICs have failed. Replace the STK chips, check fuses and the resistors next to the STK chips. Replace as necessary and re-align via the service menu.

Magnavox Rear Projection 51MP392H/17 has ghosting issue ..red/green double hallow. TV is six (6) years old. any idea what's wrong?

If this happened suddenly and the red and green images are bowed in at the center of the top, bottom and both sides, one of the convergence amplifier IC's has failed. The part number is STK392-120. Make sure it is a genuine Sanyo brand replacement; there are a number of cheap imitations out there that do not last. Generally they cost less than $30 each.

Note: there are two of these in each TV. They are notorious for having a high failure rate, so I usually replace both. (FYI: each chip has three amplifiers. Each color gets two amplifiers, so one color uses an amplifier on each chip. That's why we usually see at least two colors go out of whack when this problem happens.)

I assume you have already tried a different video source (DVD, VCR, etc.) to rule out input signal defects. If the problem arose right after the set was moved, either the optical alignment was disturbed or (less likely) there is a stray magnetic field near the set that is causing problems (magnetron from a microwave oven?). There is a procedure (sometimes provided in the owner's manual) for adjusting convergence using the remote control that can fix minor alignment problems. If you want to gamble it is not a hardware failure, try it first along one edge of the picture.

If you cannot shift the red or green dots in the convergence pattern, stop immediately, and make a note of where and in what direction you tried to move the dots. Inability to converge the dots is a strong indication the convergence amplifiers are bad (that is their job - to keep the colors lined up with each other). You will need to undo any adjustment attempts after you replace the convergence chips and any fuses or resistors that got burned when they went out, so don't make too much extra work for yourself or your service tech.

Tried to auto adjust the guns, will not come within range

Hi Tod,

If colors do not align correctly, most likely you have a convergence failure. This requires replacement of the 2 STK ICs and possibly some low ohm resistors.

Some Toshiba have a Horizontal oscillator/Drive IC failure that results in a small or shrunk picture (2-3" border on all sides). The 3 colors do not align properly because of the reduced Hor drive signal. The convergence adjust controls will work but not allow good adjustment. Convergence is ok, Hor Drive signal is incorrect.

Many do-it-yourselfers mistake the Hor Drive problem in Toshiba RPTV with convergence failure. Too much adjustment of the convergence controls may cause the saved data to be really messed up and require more difficult alignment in the service mode.

If minor or simple adjustments in the customer convergence adjust menu do not fix your problem, there is a fault. Stop adjusting until fault is repaired

Convergence failure can be accurately identified with the Convergence Gallery on our website. Service in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and other Canada cities.

Green Convergence on a JVC 56" rear projection t.v.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Each color (red, green & blue) has an amplifier IC (STK-).
When there is a convergence issue, the first step is change both
IC's for reliability. Then check for open fuses devices, usually
pico fuses.Then re-check convergence alignment.......T.
