Computer turns on but now booting up

I have a dell dimension 3100 pc. It comes on but the power light never comes on green.. its on amber and the computer never boots up. I'm thinking something is wrong with the memory but i was wondering if i should hear a few beeps to diagnose that problem. I just want to know if its the memory gone bad or if its any other additional problem with it. Thank you for whatever help you can assist me with

theres no beeps.. just the usual start up sound with the cpu fan.. i'v tried removing the memory cards and place them back.. and still it never boots... the amber light isn't blinking its just on constant no blinking at all.... the sound of the computer is normal like it works but it's just not booting up.. and the light remains constant amber

If it was detecting a memory problem, the computer should produce constant single beeps. Do you hear any beeps at all, or can you hear the Hard Drive wind up when you power it on?

Hi,

amber light — Blinking amber indicates a problem with the power supply inside the computer. If the system cannot boot and there is a solid amber light, this could indicate a problem with the power connections for the CPU on the system board (see "Power Problems" in your Owner's Manual).

Good Luck

Make sure the memory stick is securely installed on the motherboard. Also make sure that any additional cards in the expansion slots are also securely installed.

I had a similar problem on another machine and it was due to a memory stick that wasn''t fully secure, I reinstalled the memory stick and made sure it was a solid connection and it resolved my problem.

Please let me know if this helps you.

When i start up my dimension 3100 dell desktop instead of a green light i get a flashing amber light. people say it is the power supply but the light wouldnt even come on if it was. can you please help me?

No, the light WOULD come on if it was a Power Supply problem.

1) If ALL of the LED lights on your computer were on at once, they would use less than 1 Watt of power.

2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts.

3) A typical Processor uses from 51 to 125 Watts. Depends on what Processor it is.

Dell Dimension 3100 desktop computer?
An Intel Pentium 4.

Intel Pentium 4 model 640.
Can operate up to a frequency rate of 3.2GigaHertz. (3.2GHz)
Fits in a Socket 775 processor socket. (Also know as Socket T)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Pentium_4_microprocessors#Prescott_2M_.2890.C2.A0nm.29

Can use up to 84 Watts.

You have enough power to light that LED light, but not enough power to turn the Processor on.

Blinking amber light and wont boot up.

if the power button was blinking amber, unplug your tower, and hold the power button for 30 seconds to 1 minute, to use any excess power stored in the capassitors in the pc. this was told to me by a dell tech, it is a small issue with the 3100=E310, and 5150=E510 Dimension desktops

Can't boot up Dell 5100 Dimension, amber light flashes

When you mean the amber light, is that the blinking hard drive access light or the power light? Different cases have different colors on it. Mine has blue and green lights.

If you see the boot screen (bios) and then after it goes to boot, does it blink and hang?

This could be a simple operating system issue, hard drive or hardware/motherboard issue. If you could provide more information, that would help.

Computer wont power up. Light stay amber and fan come on

Hi. No I think mobo is ok as you've got power to fan and lights. Are the drives kicking in? if yes then I think its your memory. Also if the drives are kicking in then your cpu is also ok. So that leaves the memory and graphics card. Good luck

Power button stay amber, dont finish booting

Generally, this is an indication of a motherboard failure. Remove any items connected externally and and expansion cards intenally and see if the Power LED indication changes. if not changes, then replace the motherboard
