The evaporator fan is supposed to speed up when the fridge needs to cool down quickly; then slow down. So if it's just a normal sort of loud/soft whirring, then that's normal.

But if you have ice buildup on the back wall and roof of freezer, then you have encountered the dreaded GE crappy defrost system flaw. That causes ice to build up everywhere you can see, and where you can't see, like on (and in!) the evaporator motor. When the motor kicks into high, it impacts the ice buildup, and buzzes like a chain saw.

Solution is to unplug the fridge and let all the internal ice melt. Or get a blow-dryer or heat gun and carefully heat the freezer back wall, etc. Don't get it too hot, or you can melt the plastic!!! Be patient.

Sometimes the evaporator fan makes this noise. This could be a sign of it going out but i wouldnt worry about it untill something actually goes wrong.

Freezer side is making an extremely loud humming sound. Ice maker is working fine. No ice buildup anywhere in the freezer that we can see. Loud humming goes on for a few minutes each hour.

Hey Joanne, I appreciate your inquiry!

Based off my understanding the freezer side of your Frigidaire refrigerator is making a loud humming noise. The humming sound could be coming from your compressor. If the sound is a new development it may be a possible issue with the fan pushing further against the wall. You may need to seek help from a professional technician for proper diagnosis and repair. This will help you from purchasing any unnecessary parts. Hope this information is helpful to you. -Matt

Refrigerator clicks then hums but does not get the compressor going. Bad compressor - how do you test if starter switch or compressor?

The clicking sound you hear is the overload relay trying to start the compressor. The humming sound is the compressor. Purchase a overload relay kit. Unplug the unit. Remove the bottom back cover. On the side of the compressor is a black box. Usually held on by hard wire clips. Remove the cover. Inspect for burned wires. Take note of the relay components. Remove them and lay them out in the order and orientation in which they were removed. If you see burn marks on the you have a bad relay, also the white 'V' shaped component - shake it. If it rattles it is bad. Replace with the new overload. If everything looks good. With a multi-meter measure the Ohms across the three pins on the compressor. You will get One high reading. Across the other two you will get lower readings. The two lower readings when added together must equal the high reading. If they do not you have a bad compressor. To replace a compressor is a major repair. The cost is usually $600.00-$750.00.

Rule of thumb; "If the repair cost is 1/3 or more of your initial purchase price of the unit - Buy a new unit".

Why would a brand new fridge make strange noises already?

Good Afternoon Friend,

I understand that your Frigidaire refrigerator, model# FFSS2614QS, is making a strange humming noise. Your new, high-efficiency refrigerator may introduce unfamiliar sounds. These sounds normally indicate your refrigerator is operating correctly. Some surfaces on floors, walls, and kitchen cabinets may make these sounds more noticeable. This could possibly be the compressor that you are hearing. Modern, high-efficiency compressors run much faster than in the past. The compressor may have a high-pitched hum or pulsating sound. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-
WP

The water dispenser on my new side by side hums when it dispenses water. Is that the correct sound or is it not actually pumping. Water comes out slow

The humming sound your hearing is electricity being sent to the valve, causing an elctromagnetic effect to open the solenoid to allow water to pass. Slow water could be from a few things, a clogged line, or build up in the valve or from a filter that needs to be change. Pull the machine out and remove the lower back cover. Locate the water valve. With the water turned on and connected remove the 5/16" water line (the bigger one) and then have someone else press the water in the door. If the cylinoid is operating correctly it should spray water out.

Compressor hums and shuts off

This sounds very much like a compressor failure. unplug the refrigerator and check the condenser for cleanliness. After cleaning the condenser and allowing the compressor to cool, plug it back in and listen for the same sounds. If the compressor was overheated it should restart after it cools. If it does not restart the compressor could be seized. Check the compressor warranty against the age of the refrigerator.
