Sony KP-46WT510 Rear Video Projector Convergence Problem
I have had this television for almost 5 years; the manufactured date was July 2003. One day, the image on the television was all screwed up:
There is a concave image(middle part of the picture bending in and the outer ends bending out)
The red-blue-green colors were separated so it looked like 3 images at once
It's all blurry with color messes everywhere. There are red and green lines at the ends. It also has the same problem with my DVD/VCR. Convergence menu and flash-focus doesn't work - otherwise the t.v works perfectly fine. From all the other questions, I think the problem is something about replacing convergence amps, whatever that is. But I'm not circuitry-savvy so I don't know what in the world I have to do to fix it. What items do I need, where can I get it, how much will it cost, how will I fix it and is it advisable for someone to look at it or will I be able to do it myself? (I'm handy at fixing things) Is there anyone willing to share their time? Thanks a bunch. exact same problem
Re: Sony KP-46WT510 Rear Video Projector Convergence...
Hi,
The diagnosis you have made is correct. The Convergence amps are not working up to their optimum power causing the image to come in a concave shape. These amps are necessary for positioning the image in x&y co-ordinates accordingly. If you are not a circuit savvy then, I would recomend you to take it to the technician or a service centre.

If the convergence feature did not fix the issue then you will need to install a convergence repair kit. Your model uses the Sony type 1 convergence repair kit which is available from www.tvrepairworld.com and includes the parts and the CD with instructions.

Convergence out ICsare located on D Board of Sony KP-46WT510 These are 2 big ICs of black color mounted on silver heat sink. Check out location of D board in TV in below exploded view...
Unfortunately it is a job that will require an experienced TV technician, You have 2 large 18 pin ICs called convergence amplifiers who's job is to insure beam alignment of the three picture tubes in your TV set (Red, Green & Blue). One of the 2 chips have shorted and more than likely cause damage to the 2nd one as well. This involves removing the board where the ICs are mounted then rmoving the ICs by a process called desoldering & resoldering during the replacement process. They are not a plug in Ics. Hope this helps.
convergence ic's replace all 3 be carefull make sure to reapply the thermal compound to the heat sinks after cleaning the old stuff off stk's can be had from global

Comments: Could be cold solder joint on one of the STK IC's on the D
Board. They run hot and the solder connection might have broken down
causing intermittent condition which could have opened the fuse on the -22v line.
