This is not an answer. The S3 normally does not produce dark pictures, and I have seen this issue before. It has to do with a setting somewhere on that camera that needs to be adjusted. I wish I knew what that setting was/is as my wife's camera has recently started doing this ...

How do i get a clear shot of an object with a blur effect on the background with my canon powershot s90? if i am at the custom setting,... how do i get it programmed???

You're seeking what's called a "narrow depth of field." Depth of field is controlled by three factors: focal length of the lens, the lens aperture (f/stop), and distance from the camera to the subject.

The longer the lens, the narrower the depth of field, The larger the aperture, the narrower the depth of field. The closer the distance, the narrower the depth of field.

Unfortunately, the lens on the S90 is a 6-22.5mm zoom, and a lens that short is going to give you a rather wide depth of field in all cases except extreme closeups.

Here are some things you can TRY to get the desired effect:

Set the camera to the sports or portrait mode to get it to try to reduce the depth of field.

Put as much distance between the subject and the background as possible.

Get as close to the subject as possible.

Zoom in as much as possible. (I know this conflicts with the previous one.)

if the lens is removeable ensure it is fitted correctly.
if there is a manaul af setting make sure it is in af for autofocus.
ensure you are not in macro mode or close up mode as this will cause bluring on non close up pictures.
to test take a picture of a subject very close up and see if it is in focus if it is you need to change camera out of macro mode.
action mode is not available for macro mode so this maybe is the case.
action mode on cannon looks like a square with bottom right corner hilighted to look like a stack of images. make sure this is set for sequence shots.

I am trying to take pictures of pennies and I can't get the camera to focus and get a clear picture. Do you have any ideas?

All cameras have a minimum focal length. That is the minimum distance they have to be from an object in order to focus clearly. If you have a digital camera with changeable lenses, that minimum focal length is determined by the lens and how it is constructed. If you have a fixed lens digital camera then the manual should tell you what the minimum focal length is.

One other thing to keep in mind is that on most fixed lens digital cameras, there is what is called a macro setting. If you switch to macro mode, it will allow you to get closer to the object and still get a good focus. Your manual should tell you how to turn on that mode.

Canon powershot s3 is digtal

This is a menu setting, in capture mode it is the slow synchro option I think. What it does is try to get the subject to have a lit background. Turn this off and you get a subject lit with flash and no background but no blurriness either.

Grainy pictures

grainy pictures are possibly casued by a very high ISO (sensativity) setting, you should be on 100 or lower for best normal shots. Higher settings are for low light and custom shooting in strange lighting or aperature/shutter speeds. Try full auto setting.

Blured viewfinder

Look at the viewfinder on the camera.

Now look on the LEFT side of the viewfinder; just above the swivel-screen.

You will see a little thumb wheel there.

That is the focus for the viewfinder. Move it up and down to bring the viewfinder into focus. (Don't forget to do this while you are looking through the viewfinder so you can see what you are adjusting.)

Easy fix. :)
