Question about Broan-NuTone Allure III QS330SS Kitchen Hood

13 Answers

ALLURE WS2 SERies range hood fan doesn't work but lights do

The fan and lights on the hood were both working while we used a new George Foreman grill on a different circuit to burn off the factory coating, which produced some smoke. Suddenly the fan went off but the lights stayed on the range hood and we have been unable to get it to work (the fan) ever since. We checked the fuse and it is working properly. It is a fairly new range hood that is used infrequently.

Has anyone else had this problem and/or do you know how to fix it.

Thank you

    Not sure what you mean by test the wires.
    If the wires aren't connected then it will not work. Please explain further.

If you had smoke then something has shorted or blown inside.

There is need to take apart the unit and access to the motor, motor control board, and wiring harness to test them using a multimeter.

If you have voltage to motor, then the motor must be replaced.

Did you check the fan motor itself.
If there is burn smell fan motor is dead.
But it might be just stuck. Renove the filter and try to rotate fan manually to see it there is free movement. It not motor might be dusted/clogged, try to vaccum or blow it with hair fan, if no help motor is dead, needs replacement. If thre is rotation look for incoming wires for burn/damage. Also check house fuse/braker box, maybe one switch is off.
Good Luck

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, it would appear that the smoke from burning of the factory coating of the George Foreman grill triggered the fault. Some ideas you may want to consider:

  • reset the logic/electronics controller. Unplug/disconnect from the mains or switch off the breaker;
  • the electronic controller operates on separate circuitry and would still operate even if the fuse is blown;
  • the electronic controller uses a small isolation transformer to bring down the 120VAC to a lower voltage. The LED indicator lights should lit up when their corresponding buttons are pushed;
  • if not, the the controller board is faulty or it is not receiving power;
  • if yes, then problem is either with the fan or the switching system (possibly relays) for the speeds of the fan;
  • if on pressing any of the fan speed button, fan would not turn but there would be a humming heard or vibration felt on the the hood's body, then it would possibly be a faulty motor capacitor.
Pls post back results or updates of any developments. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

One thing you can do is take down the hood and wire in a regular 110 plug and just plug it into the wall. Then see if the fan works. If not then it is either the fan switch or the fan motor. You can go to just a hardware store and buy a 2 way switch to see if this the problem. If this is not the problem then the fan motor has gone bad. Buy a cheap switch to test it first. This may all your problem is.

There should be 1 or 2 button shaped THERMOSWITCHES / THERMOSTATS attached to the side of the hood.

Turn off the power and remove the wires.

Tape the wire ends to prevent a short.

Test

Step 2

Connect the 2 wires together with elec tape

Ok, the Foreman grill didn't do this at all, this sometimes happen when you cook or fry on a frequent basis. the frying smoke that is produced during frying anything can pass threw the screen and some of the sticky participates can become lodged inside of the windings inside the actual motor that spins the fan around. in time, this sticky residue can prevent the motors rotation speed from reaching its limit, therefore, causing it to get unbelievably hot. this usually causes motor malfunction that will lead to failure. i suggest a total fan motor replacement.

Most Vent Fans Are Just Plugged Into A Plug Once You Remove The Bottom Screen If This Is The Case Unplug The Fan And Try Plugging Something Else Into The Plug. If You Find Out The Plug Works Then The Problem Is The Fan And It Will Either Need To Be Replaced Or Greased. Try Turning The Fan Motor By Hand While Its In The Off Position If It Is Very Difficult To Turn It May Need To Be Oiled. If There Is No Plug Pull The Wires Off The Motor And Check That There Is Power There. Please Post Your Results Here
Sincerely,
Michael Scott

    If the fuse has opened (blown), the green fan-level indicators
    will operate properly when the fan buttons/switches are pressed

    - but the fan and lights will not turn on.

    The fuse is a 5 x 20 mm, 10 Amp, Fast-Acting, 125V (min.).

    It is Part # R111638.
    The part is available at: www.inventex.com

1. No power to the range hood
Make sure there's power getting to the range hood. Check for a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. Check the wall socket (unless the hood is hard wired) for power with a voltmeter or by plugging something else in.

2. Fan switch
If your range hood only has a fan and no light or any other features, it won't start with a broken fan switch. Replace the switch if found defective.

You can call Viking and they will know for sure.I would think,as it is of comercial quality,that there may be a wire or more on the back.Most likely to connect to an ANSUL system,a type of fire suppression.It could also be for a vent hood or some attachment like a rotisserie.You can call them at 1-888-VIKING1 (1-888-845-4641).

Parts for George Foreman Grill GR20BW

Hello Rod01,
After some research, I found no parts resource for your GR20BW bun cover (I'm not saying that such a resource doesn't exsist though). So other than replacing the grill or repairing (if it's broken) your existing cover, that buying a used one at an online auction site (or wherever you can find one) for parts (if the cover is intact on the parts grill) would be a place to start looking. I tried and didn't find anything for your GR20BW, but did find a few GR10BW grills.
I hope this helps, and Good luck.

My george foreman grill doesnt switch on when i turn on the plug, can you please help me?

Hi there,

Make sure you have power to the wall socket. Try the Grill in a socket you know that works. If it still doesn't light up and work chances are the cord or power lead could have a break in it and may need either replacing or shortening if you can find the break. If the Grill works in another wall socket then the wall socket you were using it in will need to be checked and maybe need replacing. Hope this helps.

Regards
Bryan
