Sounds like the laser is shot or the door is not making a good connection when its closed. So the system has no clue there is anything inserted. This could be from a bad latch, fried laser, or something on the motherboard itself. Does the spindle motor inside try to spin the disc?
Most likely the laser is weak. It has been awhile since I have changed a laser in a psp. But first off you should clean the laser with a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol and dry it with the other end of the q-tip. It doesn't take much for them to not be able to read a disc. If it still doesn't work you will need to replace the laser if you aren't that great at working on electronics or very small things you need to find someone to do it for you.
Hrm, I've seen DVD players with a similar problem. The solution was to dismantle them and apply fresh lubricant to the gears that control the movement of the laser, or to replace those gears if they're broken. Seems like that technique could work for a PSP, but I imagine it would be more difficult.
The UMD laser might be dirty or broken. Open up the UMD drive and give the laser a clean with a lint-free cloth. Then pop the disk back in and try again. If that doesn't work, you will need to get the PSP repaired or buy a replacement laser and do it yourself.
Sounds like the laser is either dirty or has gone bad. In order to know though, take a can of air and blow it gently onto the laser, then after this try a few games and if it starts to read them then you know that dust was the problem.
If the games still don't read then you need a new laser.
ok well the laser is bad or something else in your psp but if u would like to get games for free and etc all u have to do is put custom firmware and ill do everything and anything to help u from there so email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
You might have PSP stop reading UMD discs,
First you will do some trouble shooting with what might be wrong with your PSP
first is the Disc Spinning motor. This will not let The disc in the
UMD spin. On a working PSP you will hear the disc start to spin up, then you can hear the
laser start to twitch, followed by the laser motor moving the laser down the
something stuck in the UMD gear, try to clean the gear of arm of dust, plastic, soda, and even hair.
and at the last is the actual laser itself. It will not focus the laser to read
the UMD disc.
Hopefully this help, Pls post back should you need additional information...!
hi i just fixed my sons it wasnt reading umd's every thing else worked so have a look were the threaded rod runs threw the laser, in the centre at the back of the laser there is a little tab with a stamped groove in it make sure the laser is up against the disk spinner when turned off push the tab against the threaded rod hopefully it has seated (you ned a good light plus i used long metal twesers to push it down, easier to see on 2000 model than the fat one but you can manage good luck)
