Question about Garden

I HAVE A 2 YR OLD STIHL 460 CHAIN SAW THAT QUIT IDELING WHILE CUTTING FIRE WOOD. I HAD RUN THE SAW APPROX 1/2 HR BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. I REFUELED, BUT THE SAW WOULDN'T START OR EVEN FIRE. I PUT A NEW PLUG IN, MADE SURE I HAD A GOOD SPARK, & THAT FUEL WAS REACHING THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER. I TOOK THE SAW TO A FRIEND WHO WORKS ON SAWS. HE SAYS THAT THE PISTON RINGS ARE FROZEN ON THE PISTON & THAT THE CYCLINDER IS RUINED-THAT IT LOOKS LIKE UNMIXED GAS HAS BEEN RUN IN THE SAW. I KNOW FOR FACT THAT THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN. I USED THE SAME GAS IN ANOTHER SAW AFTER THIS ONE QUIT. DO YOU KNOW WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS?

The damage may have been done before this tank, or can of gas, Does anyone else have access to saw?
Only about 3 things can cause damage,
1, dirt or foreign object entering cylinder.
2. Unmixed gas or old gas the will cause gumming of rings.
3. overheating of cylinder due to clogged air fins.
Ok there probably a couple more but that is main things.
Put a new Kit in it and keep it away from everyone else. Or have your friend replace only what is needed if the cyl cant be saved.
Saws should have a trigger lock so no-one can borrow them.

Stihl pole saw model HT75--Was cutting a limb and the chain stopped cutting--What is the problem?

Could be a few things.

1. Clutch slipping at engine end.
2. Drive shafts have become detached from drive or broken.
3. Clutch behind the drive sprocket on the cutting head may need tightening.
4. Chain too sharp/aggressive and is trying to cut too much and the stopping the chain.
5. Chain too tight.

Saw is cutting the wood on an angle

the cutters on your chain are not filed evenly. Either take saw to a Stihl dealer and have chain sharpened or get a new chain. Ask them to show you how to sharpen your chain.

Chain saw dies when cutting into wood

Is the saw oiling correctly? need to check the RPM's at full throttle with bar and chain on to see if it is running right with a tachometer. I suggest taking it to a dealer to have them do the STIHL Engine Check List to determine the exact cause

Stihl 031av oil seams to come off bar and chain good but not when cutting into wood bar gets very hot. Stop the saw and oil drips from the saw. The small hole in bar is clear of dirt and lines up with...

Try loosening the chain just a little bit. Not enough to have it come off the bar, but enough to reduce the friction between the chain and the bar.

Hope this helps!

MS290 have fuel spraying out of vent and fuel cap. took to dealer for repair, he replased the carberator and the vent line. no problem at the store. went to work cutting fire wood, stated doing thye same...

The engine is getting pressure someplace. It could be a cracked head.(This would mean the saw is a goner!) I would look at the dealer invoice and see what their warranty time is on their work and explain to him, that he did work that did not fix the problem! There is always the chance that he has a used chainsaw that he would be willing to trade for the money you have already spent!

How do you set the carb screws on a stihl d12 avt chainsaw? how many turns for high an low?//?????

I would start by opening each 1 turn. Then 1/2 turn until I got it running. While running, set the low by turning the screw out until the saw starts to slow down. Then turn in until the same thing happens. Set the screw about 1/2 way in between. Do the same with the high but do it while running at a higher RPM. Do not run it wide open unless you have the chain in wood, cutting. Good luck...Lee

Husky 460 chains too long (or is the bar too short)

Hello, your bar may not be seating on the adjusting pin properly.Like you I have cut thousands of cords used every saw made and the only time something like this happens is when the adjuster isn't seating properly. Give me your model number and I'll try and round up a manual for you.

Remington electric chain saw 3.5 -14''

I just had my Rem. EL-8 (Mod#107624-02, 3 HP 11.5Amp) quit, too. It was less than 2yrs old, had very low hours and no abuse. I pulled it apart and found that a motor brush was burned out (at the brush electrical lead; the braided wire connecting to the winding). Unfortunately, I checked with Master Distributors (http://www.nbmc.com/ ) and the brush assembly is no longer available. (For a less than 2-year old saw!!) They do have some parts for Remington saws, however.

Premature burnout seems to be a function of some combination of:
- using a too-light gauge extension cord for the amperage of your tool / length of extension. You can find recommendations for proper minimum gauge on the web. (This shouldn't have been the problem in my case because I used a 12-ga. 25' extension.) See: http://www.askthebuilder.com/B174_Extension_Cord_Size_Chart.shtml
- running too hard (big wood) for too long. I admit this seems pretty subjective; if the saw is cutting, why quit, right? But it's probably important to ease up and not let it get too hot.
- poor saw design. (internal parts don't match the power/amperage involved.)
