Are you running the MCE version of XP and is it installed? Look for c:\Windows\eHome directory. If you find that directory, then you should have MCE installed and running. If not, you need to get and install the MCE version of XP. Then look here for further information to getting your remote to work with the MCE.

you might have to open up your network connections click start control panel network connections this may vary depending on your operating system look for local area connection if you see a red x or a yellow exclamation or question mark you will need to update or install the driver or it could be firewalled
make sure your modem/routers settings are correct ie:password user name, firewall settings to allow your internet to connect also test the lead/s whether usb or ethernet you might check your modem first to make sure that you are getting a connection
click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll down network adapters + expand Ethernet driver you might see a yellow question mark? This means you need to update the driver right click you will have options to update driver disable uninstall or select properties general you will have the options to troubleshoot or to update driver rollback or uninstall
a yellow? question mark means you need to install/update driver right click to install driver
last resort ring your ISP internet sevice provider get them to check your modem for internet access online
hope this helps

Hate to sound dumb, but have a new Soney lap top and can not find place to plug in telephone cable so that I can go on line. Have several other computers and each has places to plug in the wall to the...

Does it have a modem? I'm thinking you probably do not have a modem ... dial ups are generally a thing of the past. Fewer and fewer computers come with modems built in, deferring to a network (NIC) connection or wireless connection. A NIC connection looks like a telephone connection but the NIC (Network Interface Card) has 8 conductors while a modem would have only 4 or 6. Warning, NEVER plug a NIC into a telephone outlet. A NIC operates at a very low voltage ... if the phone rings while your computer is plugged in ... there will be a puff of smoke as 60 volts enter your computer ... guess what is next ...

If you have several computers and are presently taking turns plugging the computers in for a dial up ... I would suggest to you it it time for a wire or wireless network in your home. That way you can have all of your computers share your conenction ... though I will tell you in advance, your connection speed will be severly hampered due to the current speed limit of about 56,000. Cable, fIOS or DSL lines operate in the millions of bits. If you have this type connection ... you still need a modem ... just add a router to build your network, but you dont need individual computer modems.

If you are interested in building a network ... you will need a wire/wireless router and a modem. You would control the modem from a computer and you would install connection sharing from within that computer. This will allow the networked computers to share the connection you have. It similar to a client - server network in that one computer controls and then shares the conneciton with other computers. ... still it would be a peer top peer network (no computer is superior to any other computer)

Im starting to ramble ... if you are interested in a network ... research the topic and if you get stuck, post a question. There are lots of network "expert" volunteers who roam these virtual hallways.

Which accessories are a 'most have' for connecting my TV to a desktop pc?

You'll need:
•VGA cable
•S-Video Audio to 3 RCA Type Adapter Cable
•HDMI cable
•DVI cable
Check the connection options on your TV. If your TV has a VGA connection slot, plug the TV into the computer with a VGA cordlike a computer monitor. Connect one end of the VGA cable to the back of the computer and the other end to the TV. Switch between normal TV viewing to displaying your computer on your TV by selecting the proper mode from the remote control, some remotes will mark the proper mode as "VGA" while others will label it "Computer" or "PC."
Check the back of your computer to see if you have an S cable slot. Connect S cable portion of the S-Video Audio to 3 RCA Type Adapter Cable to the computer and plug in the green audio plug to the audio port of the PC. Plug the red white and yellow RCA cables into the matching colors of the RCA slots on the TV. With this method you will need to switch modes from TV to video.
Check the back of the computer and TV for either DVI or HDMI slots. The slots on your computer must match, you cannot connect a DVI to a HDMI. Plug one end of the corresponding cable into the the back of the TV and the other end into the computer. Choose the correct program mode, HDMI or DVI, from the remote to view the computer from the TV.

One of two HP laptops connects to network but quit on Internet

did you play with your wireless router settings..?? When it is shown as unidentified, you have most probably set as hide network name . other computers may show up the name if you have saved the network settings on them at least once.

Drivers are fine as they are able to detect the network.

A network cable is unplugged

OK, in order to solve this problem, I will need more information:

1) What is your operating system (i.e. Windows XP? Windows Vista?)

2) Is this a laptop or a desktop computer?

3) If it is a laptop, is there a switch on the case that turns on and off the wireless ability? Check your user manual - it might be as simple as turning on the wireless switch.

4) If it is a desktop, what kind of wireless adapter did you install?

I'll be able to help more when I get this information. In the meantime, here are a few things you can do:

First of all, you need to delete all of the duplicate connections from Network Connections. They won't really hurt, but they're not helping either. To delete them, just right-click on them one at a time and choose "delete."

Next, you need to understand what the message "a network cable is unplugged" refers to: this has nothing to do with wireless. If there is no actual hard-wire cable connected to your computer, the port (that's the opening that you plug a network cable into) will tell Windows that it is empty. This results in the message "a network cable is unplugged." You can ignore it, or - if you plan to use this computer with a wireless connection only - you can right-click on the connection in Network Connections and choose "disable." This stops the message from appearing, and can be reversed (enable) at any time.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Do you have your wireless network locked down with a password? It should be just like setting up a wireless network, you may have to enter the info in manually in the TV to make it work properly. I'm trying to get my link stick but they are sold out everywhere. Once I get it I can help you guys.

Network connection says connected but receives nothing

We are using software called Brainware Columbus to do Remote OS Deployment, Software Deployment & Remote Support. We have had LANDesk installed on all our computers, and since we uninstalled LANDesk and installed McAfee 8.7i Enterprise, we have had some difficulties with some computers where they show they are connected to our Wired Lan, but their IP settings have dissappeared, the settings are blank. When you click on the repair option for the network, it gives an error straight away, and we have also tried Uninstalled & Reinstalling the NIC, that also doesnt solve the problem. Please help
