Games and blu ray not working

hi there,
has this happened all of a sudden, or have you been having problems before this? It sounds like the laser has gone in the blu-ray drive. does it play dvd's? if it plays dvd's then its the blu-ray laser that has gone, but if it does'nt play anything then i'm afraid depending which version of the ps3 you have, one or both lasers have stopped working and you will need to get the laser replaced. did the ps3 get moved or dropped recently? if so it's also possible that the cable has just come loose? but if the drive is taking discs in but not playing, then it's definitly the laser. so unless you know how to replace this youeself, you will have to take to local repair shop or send back to sony for a replacement console. this way will set you back 150 quid tho. Hope this helps.

Tip

PS3 Makes a Grdining Noise - Here is the fix!

This tip is for people who have already disassembled their Play Station3 console and tried to replace the laser in the Blu ray optical drive.

If you replace the laser and then reassemble the Blu ray optical drive and the drive will no longer accept discs (the gears grind, or you can not push the disc in) follow these steps to resolve.

(Note: if you can not push the disc in because something is "blocking" the drive, refer to this tip: http://www.fixya.com/support/r4140687-bluray_drive_ps3_not_accept_discs_after )

Remove the metal casing of the Blu ray optical if you have not already done so. This requires removing the three black screws and the two silver screws on the bottom of the Blu ray optical drive.

With the metal casing removed, locate the 5 black screws on the top of the Blu ray optical drive to remove. There are two on either side and one at the back in the middle.

"Fold" the top over. There is no reason to remove it completely.

On either side of the drive inside, there are two long black pieces with "teeth" to interact with the gears.

You need to forcefully push the bar on the left side of the drive all the way back.

The white Gears in the front of the PS3 should be able to move freely (push on them and they should move back and forth to allow a disc to go in)

Make sure the black bar has one or two of the "teeth" in line with the black gear near the front of it. Verify that the white pieces will still move freely.

Turn on your PS3 and wait for it to power up.

Reassemble the Blu ray drive. You should test your Blu ray drive first before reassembling the whole PS3.

PS3 Won't accept discs - Here is the fix!

This tip is for people who have already disassembled their Play Station 3 console and tried to replace the laser in the Blu ray optical drive.

If you replace the laser and then reassemble the Blu ray optical drive and the drive will no longer accept discs (like there is something blocking the disc) follow these steps to resolve.

(NOTE: if your PS3 is not accepting discs because the disc just won't push in, not like there is something solid blocking the drive, or your drive is making "grinding noises" refer to this tip: http://www.fixya.com/support/r4321102-bluray_drive_ps3_makes_grinding_noise )

Keep the drive together for now (do not take the top off) and reattach to your Play Sation 3 console.

Turn on your PS3 and wait for it to power up.

Now, take the top of the Blu ray optical drive by “unfolding it” so the top of the drive rests on the PS3 power supply.

With the top off, hit the Eject button on the front of your PS3.

The drive gears should “pop” back into place.

Turn off your PS3 and reassemble the Blu ray drive. You should test your Blu ray drive first before reassembling the whole PS3.

On my ps3 80gb system, the disc never spins up. I don't have a problem replacing the part myself, but I don't know what part to order. can you help. Thanks! Mike

Hi there, the PS3 blu ray is a bit of a complex device. Basically the way it work is before the disc is even spun the laser reads and detects what kind of media is inserted into the PS3. As you are saying the disc is not spinning there are 2 possible causes for this.
1. The blu ray lens has gone and is unable to read blu ray discs, hence the disc does not spin as none is detected.
2. The actual motor that spins the disc has gone. This is a much more unlikely reason, the blu ray lens is a common problem on the PS3.

As a shot in the dark you could try a laser lens cleaner but make sure it is suitable for blu ray. If this does not work you are going to have to purchase a new blu ray drive. You can get them for around £70 on ebay but you need to make sure you get the right one. Check your PS3 model number and google it to find which drive you have.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

The system is not reading any games

Hello there,
The reason your system is not reading any game is because the lens is not working, to fix this, follow the steps below;
  1. Unplug the power cable, video cable and controllers and remove any discs from the disc drive
  2. Remove the rubber foot on the left side of the PS3, unscrew the security screw and slide off the top lid.
  3. Unscrew all nine screws under the lid and lift off this section to reveal the inside. Be sure to unplug the cable that connects to this lid before completely removing it.
  4. Remove the gray box. This is the Blu-ray drive. Disconnect the power supply and the cable connecting it to the motherboard
  5. Remove the five screws on the outside of the Blu-ray drive to remove the metal shell.
  6. Remove the next set of screws on the black plastic cover to gain access to the inside of the Blu-ray drive. Disconnect the red and black cable to pull the two plastic halves apart.
  7. Remove the cables and brackets and screws holding the laser in place and slide off the laser module. Be sure to check the model number on the laser to make sure you purchase the right replacement model.
  8. Replace with new laser module, reverse your steps and reassemble the PS3.

My ps3 will not read my disc sometimes and other times it will read it but it will not work

The disc may be quote, "Corrugated", hence the laser is having a hard time following mis ~ aligned structural pattern. Try to use a CD ~ Lens Cleaner. :)

Games and Blu-ray movies do not work

The laser is weak or the drive is bad and that is a common problem with the ps3. I agree that its frustrating that a company puts out a product that is not quality. You should be able to find a laser (if you can get into your ps3 drive and replace it, if your handy), or its easier to replace the drive, you can find them on Ebay all the time.
