My kenmore Model 110.82873820 is doing the same thing.

Kenmore 110.82891110 - The knob spins and will not turn the stem. Is the knob the only thing that controls the turning of the stem? The screw on part of the knob we have is metal not plastic and appears to be in excellent condition. The threads do not appear to be stripped. The timer appears to be in working order so that is not the problem for us.

I ordered the knob but cannot figure out how to take the old one off?

I looks like it should just spin off but it is not?

If the knob is tight on the timer stem, then the timer has failed.

If the knob is loose, then maybe just the knob has failed.

You can order either of these from a number of places. One I recommend is searspartsdirect.com. YOu just enter your model number and find the exploded view for the controls. If it does not find it, drop a number off the end of the model number that you've given and try again.

They are easy to replace.

Reply back and I can give you more advice or instruction.

I discovered today that the knob was loose because I had inadvertently loosened it while cleaning and perhaps this was also from years of vibration. All I had to do was to turn the knob CW until it was able to turn the dial again... wahoo!!!

Quite possibly - assuming you can get a replacement unit.
Consult a local (or closest) representative to see if spares are still available, but don't hold your breath.

There should be a spring clip that holds the timer knob on. It or the timer knob may need replaced. Here is a picture of the timer knob and the spring clip. Sure hope this helps and best wishes.

Kenmore Series 80 Washer timer knob spins

Something in the timer came apart. Timer needs replaced. When in good working order, the timer should ONLY ever be turned clockwise..Reversing this could break it.
