My black ink cartridge needed replacing, so I replaced it, but printer is saying my tri-color cartridge is incompatible. J4680 all-in-one - 'Incompatible Print Cartridge : Tri-color.

Exact same problem here, unfortunately I have not resolved the problem. Printer worked fine until I changed the black cartridge with a new HP OEM cartridge. After 4 or 5 print jobs, the incompatable color cartridge error surfaced. The color cartridge is the OEM that came with the printer and there is NO Way it can be out or even low on ink.

Yup. I have the same problem with a J4500. They're both HP print cartridges, and the right ones for the printer. They worked well for a while, now the tri-color one is throwing the Incompatible Cartridge error. No amount of cleaning the cartridge, restarting the printer, etc, will make this error go. What a waste of money that cartridge was.

I don't have an opion about the printer yet - I installed it for a customer - but I do have an opinion about HP's customer service. The tri-color cartridge that came with the printer didn't work (incompatible cartridge error). I spent over 7 hours with HP's support in INDIA (good luck understanding them and vice versa - and I am NOT racist - it's just a fact). After telling my story over and over, doing their troubleshooting steps 5 separate times and being on hold and waiting for call backs I finally asked for a supervisor. I told him in no uncertain terms that he WILL replace the cartridge and I won't take any more **** from the unsupportive support idiots. I got a new cartridge. Was it worth it? Not sure yet - customer hasn't really used the printer much yet but I'm going to encourage her to print out a few pix to make sure. What a load of garbage!

My ink level indicator went from showing full to a replace tri-color cartridge message. I tried taking the cartridge out and re-inserting it. I tried unplugging the copier for 5 minutes, still I'm having the same error message. The color cartridge is full but the estimated level indication shows a replace cartridge message. No fix found.

Have you checked your manual for any troubleshooting tips? If your manual is inadequate, check the HP website. Is the black cartridge the correct one for your printer? If not, that could be part of the problem.

I had the same problem with the hp 4580. i needed to replace the black ink which i did. then the error message appeared "incompatible print cartridge tri color"...chatted with hp customer support, wasted a hour. claimed its a hardware problem need to have it fixed. i asked would i be charge he said yes but the printer was under warranty. he asked other questions...bottom line i left the chat box....bought another hp 4580, used same cartridges, same message...THEN finally i replaced the color cartridge...and BAM! it worked on both printers. solution...replace the color cartridge...cons..if this happens again its a waste of money to keep buying the colored ink...

My brand new J 4580 printer that did only 25 pages of printing now suddenly has the same problem with the black cartridge that came with the printer. Looks to me like a real crappy printer. Definitely not close to the quality of my previous 8 years old HP G85. I will definitely not recommend this J 4580 printer to anyone - a waste of money!!!

These types of fatal cartridge errors (i.e. "Refer to device documentation to troubleshoot"), along with the famous "Incompatible Cartridge" error message, typically signifies the HP 901 ink cartridge is suffering from internal electrical (micro-electronic) damage. You can bypass these cartridge error (temporarily in most cases) and run a cartridge health diagnostics check, via the 2 service procedures below:

Why is print quality poor after inserting new ink. Copies are faint and have lines

the cartridge is clogged with ink that has dried and reduced the slit. you need to replace the cartridge with a new one. it happens usually if you recharge the cartridge 3 or 4 times with compatible ink.

How to clean ink absorber for canon mp237

First of all open the ink cartridge of your printer.
When the ink cartridge would move all the way over, then disconnect the power cord of your printer.
Now pull the frame of rubber from the printer and remove ink pads.
To clean ink pads you may place them in a bowl having warm water and start rubbing and squeezing them to clean it from ink.
After removal of ink, keep the pads separate for dry.
When the pads get dry completely, place them back in rubber frame.
Reinstall the rubber frame in your printer.
