Start up problems with Sony Vaio VGN-A517S

I am currently pulling my hair out re this start up problem with my Vaio.On booting the initial windows xp screen comes up then the screen goes into a black - black - blue screen change until it comes to my login page.Once this is done it will take me to my main screen however it has to go black for a few seconds prior to loading again. The initial start up takes c 10 seconds or more but is becoming frustrating.Running xp home.I have attempted via various means to adjust the start up but it all comes back to the same damned thing.......can you please help?Cheers,Patrick.ps once the machine is running it is fine.Shutdown - no probs just the start up.

Have you carried out a virus scan recently, or cleared out your old temp internet files?

Have you checked to see what programs automatically load on boot up?

Assuming that your hard drive is not about to die, it sounds as though the problem could be caused by a program that is loading on boot up or a rogue program that is slowing everthing down. This could even be a program you are unaware of, or that you inadvertently downloaded.

Click Start, Run, type MSCONFIG then click OK. Then click Startup. This will show you all the programs that load as soon as you boot up. There are two things you could try.

    1) Make a note of all the programs that are checked. Then as a temporary measure uncheck them all and reboot. If the boot up is much faster, then one of your programs is causing the problem and you will be able to find out which one by a process of elimination.

    2) Alternatively, boot your computer in safe mode. Rather than explain here how to do this, do a Google search.. Safe mode will only load essential programs and again you will be able to establish whether it is indeed a program causing the problem

How do I access the boot menu at startup, Sony vaio vgn cr190 Win XP?

You can either try to spam the F12 button upon start-up to directly select which device to boot from, or either F4 or Delete are the typical keys used to get into the BIOS and you can change the boot order from there to automatically select a CD drive device if it ever detects one.

Hi, Im trying to re-install windows xp pro sp2 on to my sony vaio vgn-t1xp. i booted from the cd, deleted the partitions that were currently on the harddrive, and then went on to format it (NTFS). once...

Once the setup files are copied don't let it boot from the cd-drive anymore, at the prompt "Press any key to boot from cd...", please do not press any of the keys. However you do require the cd in cd-rom for the rest of the setup.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-Nr110E and the right mouse button will not depress. Also, I am tired of windows Vista, but whenever I go to downgrade to XP it will not let me... kind of a double wammy question...

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Mouse
Check to see if the RIGHT button is enabled and mapped to a function.

If your computer is "designed for Vista", your experience with installing XP will be unsatisfactory -- drivers for audio/video/networking will be unavailable.

Anyway, backup your files to an external hard-drive.
insert the Windows XP CD, and "cancel" any "auto-run" things.
Shutdown.
Restart, and force the computer to boot from the CD.
As it boots, you will be able to install XP, no matter what is currently on the hard-drive.

Sony vaio VGN FS 742W notebook Startup problem. When swithed ON,Vaio,Window XP screen appears and then window 'isass' appears & notebook swithes OFF automatically.Pl.advise solution for the above....

If Windows appears, and start booting, then the problem concerns the operative system and not the hardware.

That is good news, because all you need to do is using the original computer recovery disk, or finding a Windows setup disk to reinstall Windows.

To reinstall Windows, start the computer with the Recovery Disk or Windows Disk inside and chose Boot from CD when asked, then follow instructions.

Regards.

Bsod, error code:0x00000024, hdd problem booting xp os

Can you do this

Boot from the Windows XP CD.
Watch for a Press any key to boot from CD... message similar to the one shown above.
Press a key to force the computer to boot from the Windows CD. If you do not press a key, your PC will continue to boot to the Windows XP installation that's currently installed on your hard drive. If this happens, simply reboot and try to boot to the Windows XP CD again.
When the Windows XP Professional/Home Setup screen appears, press R to enter Recovery Console
Select your OS and enter password (if needed)
When you reach the command prompt type the following and then press Enter:
expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll
Using the expand command as shown above, d represents the drive letter assigned to the optical drive that your Windows XP CD is currently in. While this is most often d, your system could assign a different letter. Also, c:\windows represents the drive and folder that Windows XP is currently installed on. Again, this is most often the case but your system could be different.
If you're prompted to overwrite the file, press Y.
Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.
