If your motherboard supports both then you can but the faster pc-6400 will run at the slower pc-5300 speed. Check the specs for your computer before installing to make sure it is compatible with your motherboard. Hope this helps.

  • Determine what type of memory you need. This is the most important because there are so many types of laptop memory out there it can get quite confusing. RAM(random access memory) or temporary memory comes in many flavors. Rule of thumb, open the back of your lab top case to determine what kind you have and stick with it. Keep following and I will show you how.
  • 2 install-memory-laptop-1.2-120x120.jpg As stated above know your memory. Below is a list of the standard types of memory that are common amongst laptop pc' s.

    * DDR2 400 / PC2-3200
    * DDR2 533 / PC2-4200
    * DDR2 667 / PC2-5300 or PC2-5400
    * DDR2 800 / PC2-6400
    * DDR3 800 / PC3-6400
    * DDR3 1066 / PC3-8500
    * DDR3 1333 / PC3-10666

    Don't let the naming convention scare you. All you have to know is your memory type so your not trying to stick a square peg in a round hole.
  • 3 install-memory-laptop-1.3-120x120.jpg click to enlarge Determine how much memory you need. Generally its quite safe to either upgrade to 1 gigabyte of memory or 2. There is a sticker on the memory card that will tell you what type of memory you possess.
  • 4 install-memory-laptop-1.4-120x120.jpg click to enlarge On the back of your laptop, there should be a series of panels one of them depending on your model stores the hard drive and the other stores the RAM or memory. Use a screwdriver and unscrew the panel to gain access to the chips.
  • 5 install-memory-laptop-1.5-120x120.jpg click to enlarge Depending on your model, mines pushes in and then lifts up to release the memory chip from its bay. You would remove the memory and install the new memory in the slot. REMEMBER AS WITH ANYTHING DO NOT FORCE THINGS TO GO IN ANYTHING FORCED WILL EVENTUALLY BREAK THAT INCLUDES PEOPLE.
  • 6 install-memory-laptop-1.6-120x120.jpg click to enlarge Before you get all happy and such, CLICK ON START-->MY COMPUTER-->CONTROL PANEL-->PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE-->SYSTEM. You should get a systems properties box that will tell you how much memory you have currently on your laptop. If nothing changed chances are you installed it wrong, purchased the wrong memory, or you recieved a defective product.

    I want to now which ram is used for dell latitude 640, latitude 520, latitude 430, latitude 420 and inspiron 2200 is it ddr2 or ddr1 and max capicity for upgrade

    Here are the max memory and speeds:
    Lat C640 is Max 512M per stick DDR-266 (PC2100) or DDR333 ( PC2700 ) for a total of 1024 Meg

    Lat D520 is either 2 or 4 Meg total. DDR2-667 ( PC2-5300 )
    Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.Maximum memory for systems with the Intel 945GM chipset is 4096MB, maximum memory with the Intel 940GML chipset is 2048MB
    Lat D430 has only slot with a Max of 1 Meg. You can use DDR2-667 (PC2-5300)  or DDR2-533 (PC2-4200)

    Lat D420 is a max of  1.5G    . Use 1GB DDR2-533 (PC2-4200)

    Inspiron 2200 is one slot with a max of 1280 Meg. recomended is 1GB DDR-333 (PC2700)

    Here is a link to find almost any memory you need:
    http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx

    NOTE:
    When mixed speeds in the same PC, the memory will run at the slowest speed installed or the highest speed allowed by your system, whichever is slower.

    Good Luck

    If you are using the XP or Vista OS, if you are going to install more than 3 GB of Memory then it fails to show up on the computer properties.

    Once you install the memory then you may check the BIOS for the memory installed in the system, the BIOS shows the exact amount of memory installed in the system.

    You system is capable of 4 GB of RAM.
