I would try to error check the hard drive and also run a memory check to make sure it's not introduction errors. You'll need a floppy drive for the memory check and if the hard drive is over 30 gb, you'll have to hook it up to a desktop with an adapter as a slave to a winxp installation or, divide it into smaller 30 gb or less partitions, format with fat32 using a win98 startup disk and then scandisk each partition, checking for errors.
