I was going to post the same solution as wayneard, until I opened this topic and had a look.

More than likely this is your problem.

First thing I would suggest is to double-click the volume control on your taskbar (the little speaker) and see if any of the items has the Balance moved to one side. if so, slide it (all) to the center.

No sound from built in speakers

Use a paper clip as a hook to pull the end of the headphone socket to the front, to contact the speakers when headphone is not plugged in. Paper clip of 1 inch size has to be straightened out. One end bent at 1 inch for a lever. The other end bend 1/16" for a hook to pull the end contact. Cut that end to a chisel to use as wedge for side contacts pull to the center. You also need a bright LED flash light to see all the parts in the socket.

Yes sound card plus audio driver is needed for microphone to work.

Here is the audio driver link

Download it and have it install.

here is the details of what to plug in your sound card

line output (usually with a 1/8" stereo minijack). You can feed this into a cassette deck or an amplifier (ideally connected to a good pair of near-field monitor speakers) for playback and mixing purposes. If you have a really cheap soundcard, it won't even have this and you'll have to get your output from the...

It plays through built in speaker even when headphones are plugged in

Try a different set of headphones, it sounds like the computer is not recognizing that the headphones are plugged in. Does the computer put sound out through the headphones as well?

No voices come out, sound is good, with headphones and speakers

This sounds like a problem with your connection for your headphones. Your headphone jack on your notebook is stereo, which means that you need stereo headphones to make it work. If you look at the tip of your plug on your headphone cord, it will have 1 black ring, or 2 black rings. 1 black ring is mono, 2 black rings is stereo.

If you are using stereo headphones, and you're still having this problem, your headphone plug is not going all the way into the jack on your notebook. Press the plug all the way into the jack and the problem should be fixed.

If you physically cannot push the plug all the way into the jack, there may be a problem with the jack on your notebook that will need to be looked at.

Hope this helps. Please take a moment to rate this solution. Thanks.

Kind of confused with the question.
I would suggest you look at the line out and make sure that is not muted withing the sound settings.
Sometimes that happens.
If you are using the headphone part and you plug in the headphones it should turn off the computer speakers and goto the headphones.
If not then there is a different issue.
