SOURCE: display size / resolution

just gonna toss out a couple of questions here: 1) what do your startup items contain? since login and bootup sequence finishes completely (i.e., you see a dock and top menu), this sounds like a startup procedure kicking in. i'd look at startup items in your /Library and ~/Library directories, as well as maybe even /System/Library/StartupItems. something is resizing your monitor upon startup but only after full login and bootup. 2) Assuming the problem hasn't always existed, can you time it to a particular period of time? have you tried going into ~/Library/Preferences and viewing by modification date and pulling out a modified .plist file that would have to do with your screen resolution or virtualization of your screen, even just the standard com.apple.display.plist type stuff?

hope that helps!
Bill

Computer desktop layout changed after rebooting. approx. 1 in wide black bars on left and right of the screen and all fonts and images are bigger than usual. looks like my screen is 15 in instead of 17.

Just go to "System Preferences" then "Displays," now just choose the highest resolution in the "Resolutions" box.
This happened to me once, and that is how I fixed it. Hope it helps!

Vertical white wide band - Shivering fonts

Unfortunately that sound like a defective LCD panel. You can verify this by plugging the system into an external monitor. As long as the shimmering band does not appear on external display then it is the LCD. If it is under warranty I would suggest taking it into Apple.

You have probably formatted the hard drive when trying to install XP, XP is not compatible with Mac hardware. You will need to purchase a copy of the Mac OS or try and locate the restore disks that should have come with your computer.

I keep getting error notices when I try to open various apps

Hi Julie,

The problem encountered is a launchd problem (that's it's technical term!) and generally is due to too many apps or processes running for your mac to cope with. I would suggest getting more memory. In the meantime here are a few things to check on.
  • Press F12 to bring up the widgets and hold down the alt key. This will display a cross in the top left of all the widgets running. Close down all unneeded widgets by clicking thier x.
  • Use Cmd-Tab and hold the Apple key to display a list of all the apps running. Switch between them by hitting the Tab key again and then use Cmd-Q to close down any you no longer need running
  • If you don't need to connect to any Windows PCs in your vacinity go to the Apple in the top left and then System Prefs. In there click on Sharing in the Third row down. In the Sharing Prefs select FileSharing from the list on the left an click the Options button that appears bottom right. In there make sure both Share using FTP and SMB are unchecked then click Done.
The last of those (the one for Windows Sharing) is the one that will probably have the most effect on your system but do them all anyway. You can also use Cmd-Alt-ESC which brings up a list of running apps that you can force quit from if they don't shut down normally or hang (Not Responding) although this is often a last resort.

But more memory is what you really need.

All the best
Sean
