Are there any sets of audio 'beeps' that occur during startup? If you get anything other than a single beep during startup, it could indicate an error code for hardware failure detected during the POST phase of bootup.

If you have recovery or Windows installation CD's, try pressing F12, go to the bootup menu and try booting from the CD.

Look at the bootup menu and see if there is a hard drive as one of the options. If the hard drive is not there, or if you try to boot from the hard drive from that menu and you get error messages, that might indicate something wrong with the hard drive.

If you can boot from the CD, you may be able to use the Windows Recovery Manager to restore Windows on your hard drive, if the hard drive is working. There may also be a recovery partition on the drive that will allow you to recover Windows, but beware that files on the hard drive may be lost when you use the recovery partition.

If you have files on the hard drive you need to recover, you may be able to remove the hard drive, put it on an USB drive adapter, and use another PC to copy files off of the old drive, even if it cannot boot the old computer. After you have recovered your files, you can try the recovery partition or format the drive and use Windows install disks to restore Windows to the drive.

Recovery is taking too long
If your computer stops responding after using the recovery program, do the following:

NOTE:If the computer appears to have stopped responding after restarting from a recovery, please wait, it may take several hours or longer to complete the initial Windows XP setup process, especially if a recovery was run from a recovery disc set sent by HP. A Standard recovery may also take longer, depending on how many files are stored in user accounts (like in My Documents ).

1 Exit the stalled recovery process by pressing the POWER button on the PC until the power turns off, this takes approximately five seconds.
2 Before recovering, disconnect personal media drives, printers, scanners, cameras, camera-type memory cards, and other devices that did not originally come with the PC.
3 If you are using recovery discs, be aware of the following items:
4 If you created the recovery discs using Recovery CD Creator, be sure to run the recovery from the same drive that you used to create the discs.
5 Clean the discs with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth wetted with distilled water. Wipe from the center of the disc to the outside edge. You may also use disc cleaning kits or disc restoration kits from your local computer store. These kits produce better results than using cloth and water.
6 You may also use available CD/DVD Drive cleaning kits to clean the laser reading lens of the CD or DVD drive.
Try running a full system recovery again from the hard drive by turning the on the computer and pressing the F10 key until a Recovery Screen appears. This performs the recovery from the hard drive.
7 If the recovery stops when recovering from the hard drive, use the section Disc errors occur during the recovery process to eliminate errors on the drive. Try recovering again after the disk errors are removed.

Recovery partition not found - but it is there


Hi,

Sorry to hear of your difficulty. Usually in your kind of situation data can easily be recovered using any Windows data recovery software. But my personal suggestion to you is to first try to run a demo version first and if you see directory list of your lost data then only proceed with the purchase.

Sometimes when OS fail to install then file System of your hard drive can go corrupt which can result to partition not found error.

The message, "Disk boot failure" often means that the OS is corrupt and needs to be re installed. Try restarting the computer twice or thrice and check whether you can log in to the system. Compaq presario 5400t was running out space on hard drive so i added a seagate external hard drive. after copying over files i deleted them off of the internal drive and must have inadvertantly deleted...


use your xp disk, boot from cd then rather format, select the F option to repair.
it will rewrite your windows folder without deleting other personal folders

System32 dll file is missing or corrup


There is a good possibility that you are having a hardware failure of the Hard Disk Drive, causing the windows error.

Either in the BIOS or in the F12 boot menu should be an option to run diagnostics, see if the hard drive fails. If it does, then you need to replace the drive.

If not, you will likely need an XP Installation CD so you can boot to Recovery Console and run the command CHKDSK /P to try and recover the operating system

Sounds to me like the hard drive has bad sectors on it and it can't copy all the files to it. Also its taking way way to long to recover, shouldn't take that many hours to recover the computer with the disks.

Its taking to long to copy and verify the information to the hard drive. Get the hard drive replaced with a new one or a known good used one.

The recover section will allow her to restore from the recover partion as long as the recover partition has not been removed.
