If the dial is a rotory type of gas valve it should move to the pilot position, light the pilot and then continue to full. If the dial is stuck and will not turn at all it can sometimes be loosen by spraying some oil into the spindle. This would require several sprays and try very gently to turn but do not add excessive force - that could break the spindle. If it turns to pilot but pilot does not stay on this is normally a worn thermocouple, simple and cheap to replace. Found this site very useful, patio heater problem solving.

Our patio heater only stays alight on level one. if we move it to heat level 2 or 3 the same as level one

If the patio heater has push button settings the problem may be due to worn seals in the valve, if it has a rotor valve then try clearing out the mantle. Water sitting in the mantle will cause low flames, tipping it (switch off first) will tell if you have water in the pipes. If all else fails found this site very useful patio heater problem solving.

Patio Heater won't stay lit?

The first possibility is a bad regulator, easy and cheap to replace. The second possibility is a bad thermocouple, and the third possibility is a blockage in the pilot assembly. The last two problems require you to take the head apart to replace the thermocouple or clear the blockage. If you are not comfortable taking the head apart, hire someone to do it.

Patio heater ignites and stays lit with pilot. Then goes out.

Press and hold for 60 seconds and then it should stay lit (this is a safty feature on most models!)

Nexgrill patio heater won't stay lit

I called Nexgrill technical support at 1-800-913-8999. They are sending me a new thermo couple to keep the valve open when ignited - so the patio heater will stay on. I needed to give them the serial number (inside the propane tank door) and fax them a copy of the receipt.

Hope this helps.

Problem getting patio heater to light

the little tube that is in the path of the flame is a capillary tube that houses a thing called a j-k thermocouple. it is nothing more then a millivolt generator that produces a very small dc voltage that actuates a very small electromagnet in the main valve. when you start the unit you need to push in a button, correct? when you release the button the valve should stay open, but you say it doesn't. the millivolt generator needs to be replaced. try doing a search for "dynaglow" heaters or www dot desatech dot com for a new generator.
