The model number should be listed inside the door area or inside the storage door area on the bottom of the unit.

SOURCE: I have an old Tappan

Hi, if your gas oven is not working or not heating then you need to check this out. Today?s gas ovens are not often do not use the simple thermocouple with a pilot to prove the flame anymore. They have a much more complicated method of lighting the burner and proving the flame.

The use of electric igniters has become the standard for many ovens today. The thermostat calls for heat, power is supplied to the igniter, then after a certain amperage draw on the igniter, the gas valve is energizes to open and allow gas to flow starting the flame. As long as the amperage draw on the igniter is high enough then the gas valve stays open till the thermostat is satisfied.

Sometimes the igniter will crack and no current will go through and the igniter will not even heat up or glow. Sometimes the igniter will wear to the point where it will still heat up and glow, but the current draw will not be high enough to allow the gas valve to open. This creates a confusing situation where you look into the oven and see the glow from the igniter, but get no heat because the burner never lights up. If this is the case then you will need to replace the igniter even though it seems to be okay. The only way to know for sure is to know what the current draw requirements are for that gas valve and to have an amp meter to check the current draw.

Most of the time the problem will be in the igniter, and not the gas valve. Gas valves can go bad, but that is the case in only a very small amount of the situations. It is a pretty safe bet that if you have a problem with you gas oven lighting that you have a problem with your igniter.

If the problem still persist, then you require the service of a qualified technician to check and fix it....

TAPPAN GAS RANGE MODEL NUMBER MPF500PBWD

the owners manual will not give you any repair info. Only use instructions. Your model has an oven safety gas valve that opens only after the secondary pilot heats the end of capillary properly. You may need to clean/replace the pilot assembly OR replace the oven safety valve. If you need the valve, look on ebay because these things are over $275 from Tappan.

Why does my broiler lite when I operate my oven?

There is a possibility that the switch is not wired correctly or perhaps your selector knob is on upside down i have seen this before.

Tappan electric range, brand new - top heats up

Call the manufacturer and ask them what to do, they can advise you as to what to expect when unit operates and possible cause. Most ranges on broiler will have some heat transfer to top, but this sounds extreme

I have an old (20 years +) Tappanr 4 burner range with a double oven. I am missing the knob for the cleaning cycle but it says it is self cleaning. I need a replacement. I'd also like to find replacement...

chances ar erte hlower oven door , is your broiler, the older models didnt have a seperate broiler inside oven, rather they used 1 burner bar ,and depending on wher oyu place the food you would either bake(above) or broil( under) made sense, just pain in the rear to bend down to use it. as far a knob and gasket , perhaps you can find a model number under the main top assy so we can look up for you

Hello, Can't find model/serial number. Older Tappan custom gas stove. Burners work but oven does not. Told it has electric ignition that could be problem. Where to find it, how to remove, where to get...

Serial number labels are usually located in any one of a number of places -

Under the cooktop in one of the corners
Inside the oven door frame (not on the door)
Behind the bottom drawer pullout on the oven, left hand side
Oven back.

If this unit is anything less than 20 years old, there will be a label somewhere.

Reply back you findings and I can give you more information as to how to repair, and we can identify part numbers. You might also try www.repairclinic.com and see if you can drill down through parts when only knowing the manufacturer.
