Question about KitchenAid K5SS Heavy Duty Commercial Stand Mixer

1 Answer

120 verses 210, guess what happened!

I am living in Bangkok Thailand and faithfully use a heavy duty professional transformer to operate my mixer (kitchenAid 325 Watts professional). However, my darling daughter did not, ya she is still living! I had a local guy look at it and he said the "panel" was burned. Now you have to understand, that took 1/2 hour to get out of him! I need to know if you have a manual that will show him the "panel number" and/or operators manual so he can order a new panel and fix my blender. English is not his strong suit, but he can get it translated so english is just fine. Please help, I am lost without my mixer.

I've worked on these, and the best thing to do is buy the board, and hope for the best.

If he can ohm out the motor windings and calculate the apparent amperage, and see how that relates to the FLA (full load amps) of the mixer, and to see if either side of the winding has grounded to chassis ground, is the only way he can tell if the motor survived.

If it didn't, time to mail order a new mixer. If it did, like I said above, order a board and cross your fingers.

Just bought kitchen aid prof 600 110v and i need a new transformer to 220v since my old one was busted using this appliance. What kind of transformer will i buy? Heavy duty ? Any spec? Thanks

You need one that can deliver not only the correct voltage but sufficient current to operate fully when under load. Check the current requirement on the sticker under the base, it will give operating voltage and watts. Purchase a transformer that matches the voltage and exceeds the watts by at least 30% so that the transformer is not operating at full capacity when under load. It will not matter if the transformer exceeds the watts by 100% or more but they do get bigger and heavier as the wattage goes up.

325 k5ss mixer stir speed not working, but works in all other gears

First congrats on the great mixer that you have. next the pro 6 or professional 600 series mixers are of an entirely different design than the one that you have even though they are both bowl lift. Do you really need 6 quarts capacity? The pro series is a 575 watt mixer BTW, and it will have more power available to you IF you are doing bread or a lot of food grinding, if that is a requirement that you have then the 6 / 600 series is the better suited mixer but if all you are doing is general medium to light mixing duties then fix and keep the K5SS it a great machine,

My hobart n50 mixer, when pluged in does nothing at all. why? and what to do?

The N50 is a heavy duty / commercial counter top mixer. It is available in several different versions for different power sources. Make sure yours is the model for use with the power available at your location. The power versions are:

100-120/60/1, 100/50/1, 230/50/1, 220/60/1 and 230/60/1

This lists the information in the following format: voltage/frequency/phase. If used in the US or Canada (and many other parts of the world) you would most likely want the 100-120/60/1 or the 230/60/1 version. All are single phase, so this shouldn't be an issue to worry about. Use of any of the other versions could result in shortened life expectancy of the mixer or immediate, catastrophic failure of the mixer and possibility of burns, shock or electrocution if connection is attempted.

If the mixer matches the power available, check for proper wiring at the source point of connection and in the mixer. You may need an electrician to change the power at the connection point from 100-120/60/1 to 230/60/1 (or vice-versa since BOTH are available in North America). Also check to be sure that fuses or circuit breakers in the electrical panel are intact and on. Do not overlook GFI outlets if using the 100 to 120/60/1 version. Reset any tripped GFI outlet. If still unable to operate, verify that power is present at the connection point. If unable to operate, contact an electrician to check the power and wiring of the mixer.

The mixer data sheet is available here.

I've the 325 watts its 110V kitchen aid and I

You will need a 'step-down' transformer with a rating of at least 500 watts (~500 VA), a primary designed for 220 Volts and a secondary rated at 110-115 Volts. This type will have four terminals or leads and isolates the input from the output.
There is a non-isolating type called an 'autotransformer' which has one winding with a tap (total of three terminals) roughly in the middle. I use this type for certain devices but it is not as safe as the first-described type.
If you are living in a foreign country that uses the ~220 Volt standard, you can sometimes get one on 'semipermanent' loan from the local utility.

Under a heavy load, the mixer began clunking once per revolution

Disassembly and inspection is the only way to verify what it is. It sounds like you are correct. I have bought parts very reasonably on line and repaired our K/A mixer. The better sites ( I think I used appliancerepair.com) have exploded diagrams. If you are tearing into yours, these are invaluable, and when you get to the broken part, you'll have a name for it.

Clicking

I have the same mixer. Make sure the bowl is firmly latched into the base. also, make sure the bowl didn't get bent in shipping. If the paddle hits at a regular timed interval, it's must likely a problem with the way the bowl seats. As long as you don't hear a loud hit verses just a click, it shouldn't be a problem, just an annoyance. In time, you will probably heat tapping when you use the wire wisk. I am glad I bought mine. I hope you enjoy the difference a good mixer makes.
