Re: not able to write dvd, though cd can be written
Check the dvd some dvd are not work on certain manufactures, hp doesnt allow rewrite capabiliter on record dvd. does the manufacture dvd -r or +r or -+r, just write too..
cd-r, cd+r or cd-+r,
some cd cd rom clv, cdrom cav,
the speed of the format may be differant from cdrom and dvd
if dvd 5x and you are trying to use 16x they are not compatible.

Try reseating the DVD drive to make sure it is properly connected. Next reinstall the DVD driver. Check the BIOS to see if it detects the DVD drive. If none of these work the the DVD drive is faulty and needs to be replaced.
You will have to have the factory OS restore disc or a recovery partition from the factory on your hard drive. If you have a recovery partition then you should be able to find it when the computer POSTs at boot - it may give you several options and one them being Recovery. Don't mess with your Setup unless you know what you're doing. Another possible way is by tapping F8 while your computer is booting up. It will go to a black screen with white text. You'll see several options: Safe Mode, LastKnownGoodConfiguration, and so on. Look for a line that suggests Recovery or possibly Utilities. If you can't find it by either of those ways, then you can usually contact the maker and ask for a Recovery Disc. They will want your model info. This usually costs under $50. If yo have a disc then just put it in, reboot the computer, press the indicated button for Boot Menu, Choose CD\DVD, and then press Enter. Follow the prompts from there to reinstall your OS.
If you are receiving this Code 39 error and your CD or DVD drive
is missing and has a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager, I hope
this information is to solve this error, follow these instructions: After removing these registry keys and rebooting, it may be necessary to reinstall any CD or DVD recording applications. 1) Close all open programs
2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders
This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry.
Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.
5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete 6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor 7) Reboot your computer 8)
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have
returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the
yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.
* First you should have a CD/DVD Burner on your computer (ordinary CD player would not work). * Load the blank disc into the DVD burner * Open the folder where the song is, highlight the song by clicking it once. * Click on "copy this file" and then select the DVD drive. * Then the file should start downloading.
