Question about HP Scanjet G3010 Flatbed Scanner

Hp Scanjet G3010 will not scan hp software says its not available

Hp scanjet G3010 has been hooked up to windows pro XP sp3 and windows Business Vista sp1 with the same results (it was hooked up to the windows XP sp1 for a year and worked fine / took it off as I was not using it). I have downloaded basic drivers from Hp and used vuescan to scan documents same results. I have also downloaded drivers and full scanning software from hp with the same results. I have replaced the USB cable with a known working one same results same results. With the Hp full scanning software( and all software) and color document selected it goes through the process of asking where I want it saved (file and JPG format selected) after this is complete the scanner head comes moves out 1/2 inch and comes back to rest at home. I never get farther than this all I get is error messages saying the scanner is not available or it is not hooked up( I have waited as long as 20 minutes with the same results). No matter the combination of software, drivers or operating sys. I get the same error messages and/or results. I'm stuck HELP

    I went to the Hp url you recommended. I agree it sounds like my problem. Every step until the self test worked fine. I did a "Perform a self test if possible to verify the basic standalone functionality of the device" and the first step passed (The scanning lamp will light up) second step passed (The carriage will return to the home position) the third step FAILED (The carriage will continuously move the full length of the scanning bed) the carriage did not move after step 2. I'm Leary about going any further

This is an issue since Microsoft IE7 came out. HP got left in the dark on communicating with Microsoft computers . If your printer is still under warranty they will help you. The problem is HP and Microsoft are not working together and when this happens we all get a dance an song from everyone involved. I have wasted many hours talking to HP. I end up deleting the software and reinstalling to keep my computer working together with the printer.

If you receive an error message similar to “Scanner initialization failed” or “Scanner not
found” when trying to use the scanner, use the following procedure:
1. Close the HP Photosmart software, if it is open.
2. Disconnect the cable that connects the scanner to the computer.
3. Turn the computer off, wait 60 seconds, and then turn the computer on again.
4. Reconnect the cable that connects the computer and the scanner.
– Make sure that the USB cable is connected to the back of the scanner correctly.
The USB symbol on the end of the cable (the connector) should be facing up.
When connected correctly, the USB connector will feel slightly loose. When
connected incorrectly, the USB plug will feel overly tight.
– Try connecting the USB cable to a different USB port on your computer.

Have you read the FAQ on HP's website for this printer about there being an issue with some USB drivers when using this printer and a wide range of motherboards?

Sounds like the problem you are having.

Let me know if this helps, or if it does not solve the problem, and I will keep looking. But the problem appears not to be a HP issue at all.

    Go to Device Manager and right click on any device that says USB. Then choose "Update Driver" and tell it to look at Windows Update.

    If any drivers are replaced, note the version numbers of both the old and new drivers, update, and run tests again.

    Let me know how this worked.
