I'm a IT tech and engineer and have many years under the belt in computer repairs of all types.

This problem is an issue with ACER products in general...so don't take it personally and go nuts and spend alot of money trying to repair it.

I'm having the same problem...and there's no help out there for this without doing so. This is just short of "Apple" service tactics.

1st solution...never buy an Acer again...boycot them and let them know you are...(they charge $100.00 for a solution to the BIOS lock they created...a password issue...that all other laptop companies include for free! Also seems like a market they created deliberately to provide service $ for their authorized service techs).

My Acer 3680 keyboard will not work on BIOS boot or after OS boots completely, though it shows it is installed in the "Devices" list in control panel. This unit has Windows Vista Basic installed.

I can plug in a external USB keyboard of any brand and they work fine, either during BIOS boot or OS boot.

I purchased a new Stock Acer keyboard and it didn't work either.

I flashed the Bios and that didn't work.

I did try first to uninstall the keyboard driver itself...that didn't work.

This is an issue in the motherboard and BIOS not recognizing the commands from the keys as you press them...which could be a voltage issue...(command signal from keyboard not strong enough to be recognized...I say this as once or twice I hit the F2 key during initial powerup and it responded and let me into the BIOS to access the Setup features...but after I was in the BIOS...it would not respond to the key commands...)

Most keyboards are recognized by the BIOS by default, and don't need a OS installed or even a hard drive. This is for "Set Up" puposes.

Just for your information...buying a new keyboard may not solve the problem as it didn't in my case.

The problem is with ACER themselves.

When i reinstalled my acer aspire 3050 i tried 4 different versions of win XP, and all but 1 the keyboard wouldn't work. After persevering and getting the VGA driver to install ( which took about an hour ) my keyboard started to work fine. So long story short try reinstalling the VGA driver from the Acer website. BTW the keyboard displayed correctly in Device Manager. i.e no yellow cross. The VGA driver has the southbridge driver included in it. Which in turn controls low level devices such as the keyboard.

Odd. go to thh control panel-- then system-- hardware--device manager

check under keyboard-- is it there? (you can do all this with the mouse)

I ask because if a part of the computer stops working, it usually gets a yellow ? mark in front of it in the list. what you can try is to "remove" the keyboard if you see it-- it will not really do it, because on reboot, it will reload your drivers again-- remove or uninstall the keyboard in the device manager, then reboot the computer and soo if the reloaded drivers fix it.

if not, it may be hardware failure. windows has plenty of drivers in it to drive any keyboard-- you dont need anything special, so there's no mystery download that your missing.

can you call acer and see if youre under warranty? you may need to send it in. dont forget, you could always buy an external keyboard for 15 bucks to plug into the back to tide you over until you're ready if you need to send it in for servicing...

Click start control panel keyboard hardware make sure you have the right keyboard selected
or you might have uninstall the keyboard then restart your computer then reinstall it and its drivers
click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to keyboard you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click update driver
or if this does not fix the problem
try blowing out all of the dust from your keyboard using a fine air blower from an air compressor making VERY sure there is no MOISTURE in the lines.
dust causes static which causes lots of problems with a computer and its parts

hope it helps

I need to replace the keyboard on an Acer Aspire 3680 series laptop

Hi there.
Remove the laptop battery and the AC power supply, open the lid as far back as you can take it.
Get a small flat headed screwdriver, now, you have to take off the keyboard bezel, this is the strip of plastic above the keyboard with the power button on it, the best way to remove it is to start by the on/off button by gently prying the bezel up from the lid hinge, once you have one side out gently pull it up using your fingers, it will unclip and lift away.
Next you have to remove 2 screws from the top of the keyboard, these should be visible to you, once the screws are out carefully lift the keyboard up, you will see a ribbon cable that is connected to the motherboard, gently pull the tab up on the connector that the ribbon cable sits in and it should release it and you can now remove the keyboard and replace it.
To re-assemble just follow my direction in reverse.
Please post back with the results and for any additional advice if needed.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!
