Question about Philips 50PF9631D 50 in. HD-Ready Plasma Television

One year old 50 inch top half of screen turns to black

When first turned on full screen shows as normal.Within about a minute screen starts to fade to black.If i adjust brightness contrast and color very,very low the picture might last a little longer.It does not fade to black all at once. It will fade with horizontal lines then fade to black. If the power is turned off and you wait about three minutes sometimes the picture may return for an instance.I would like to have a service manual so that i may go over the power supply.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, I am inclined to suspect that the problem is heat related. A couple of ideas you may want to consider/explore:

  • try moving the TV farther away from the wall;
  • temporarily place a ventilator fan blowing air towards the rear of the unit;
  • operate the unit with the rear cover off;
  • check if the fans are turning;
  • electronics wise, would not suggest checking without referencing a service manual. At most that would be practical is to check for the obvious such as blistered/leaky capacitors, burn resistors.
Incidentally, for the service manual, the chassis number would have to be determined. A Philips chassis number would be something like BP2.3U.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

That could be a lamp problem. However, you can start checking the power supply board for any possible faulty component.

If you cannot bang it back to life then get a new one and don't drop that one. Repair is too expensive.

Test all power and data leads that attach to your hard drive IDE,SATA

the leads from your (motherboard to your hard drive) make sure they have secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they might be faulty

if its a 40 pin flat ribbon type it will be the first to fail

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty

even something as small as a faulty electrical fan and its lead can cause you problems

computers need all power and data to continue through every working device and to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

make sure your graphics card is securely seated with no dust built up or in the socket

if you remove your graphics check the socket to make sure its dust free

restart your computer then reinstall it this should activate found new hardware wizard

hope this helps

I have a Sony FD Trinitron 27' Model # KV-27FV310. It is approx 8 years old. After turning it on and watching a full screen for a few minutes; all of a sudden, a line came across half the screen;

top half missing is in vertical circuit of set---if it is a 27 inch and this old consider retiring it and replacing----other option is consider having a shop repair it--a rough guess would be as high as 150 dollars parts and labor is possible for your problems.

samdavismd,

It could be either but more than likely from what you describe it is the board which supplies the signal to the light engine. The board in question should have the part number marked on it. See my tip at

which will walk you through the process for changing a circuit board.
You can get any parts you need at http://www.encompass.com or http://shopjimmy.com .

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.
