Data Recovery / Windows Start Up Problems

I am trying to recover data on a friends drive, unfortunatly some service repair guy put in a snide( crack copy ) of windows xp professional sp2
, the windows validation online repeatedly pop-ed up with occasional win file as bad image ??, there seems to be a repeated winlog.exe system admin error at start up of windows which cycles around, after a patch was used, (dubious authentification ).
i have tried to use the console recovery and run chkdsk to no avail with this weird thing is in safe mode/ repair from install disk, and trying to run chkdsk, the boot cycle problem returns compounded by the fact that it will
switch the pc off for two minutes when i try to run or open files.
i am having a problem, reading the drive as an external ,i guess i am using the right jumper config for the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120, from its master setting. Can you recommend a solution ?? .Thanks //

If a drive is dropped, (freeagent) Can it be repaired? If yes. How much would this repair cost? Item fell about 2 feet from desk to floor.

Remove the hard drive and put it into an enclosure.Plug it into another computer as a slave. Then you can copy your files on it.
If it shows up in 'my computer' as a drive letter(like E: drive) but you can't access it,you can recover data on it with data recovery program to avoid losing your data.I have succeed recover data from crashed hard drive with Tenorshare data recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage, system sabotage, virus attack etc.You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm After you recover your data, you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.
If the hard drive can't be detected, you can try this way.Put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in the freezer for overnight. Then while it's still cold plug it into the computer and you may be able to view it in 'my computer'. And if needed, run the recovery program to recover your data on it.
If it fails, you will have to go to a recovery office where supply data recovery service but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money and whether they can recover data is not guaranteed.

It won't read at all is there i could recover my file ? Thank u

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this data recovery program to recover your files.

It may unable to recover all the files, but at least most of them.
