My dewalt 18 volt Dc988 XRP will not engage when you squeeze the trigger all the time. It goes in streaks or is intermittent. Also the variable speed is not working. it only goes one speed.

Your switch is having a problem it can be caused by excessive load on the motor.
The motor must be sounds not shrill and must have power , the most people think on the batteries but in more case by switch problems its the motor there is a field effect transistor inside the switch behind the cooling brass plate thats shorted and that is for the variable rpm .
Replace switch and if the motor sounds good then the problem should solved. if also the motor is bad go for a new replacement body ask your dealer.

I have a Bosch 1/2"

Sounds as though you are on the right track. I would take it apart, and see if the trigger could have some dirt or other material causing it to stick, or is it worn to the point that it needs to be replaced. Good luck!

Dewalt cordless drill dc988- drill motor works intermitantly when trigger is pulled. Works a little better as it warms up. Im thinking vsr switch, brushes, or motor/armature. please help...

Test the brushes by catching it in a stalled condition when you have it triggered, then rotate it slightly. If it takes off suspect the brushes or a dead segment on the comutator.

If it doesn't respond to this, then consider the VSR trigger... open it and test by bypassing it when in stalled condition...

DeWalt DW972 cordless drill has intermittent variable speed trigger. (Battery is fine, recently replaced) How can I clean the variable resistor in the trigger or must replace the whole trigger module?

have to replace whole trigger assembly.

worn brushes in the motor can also cause intermittent function, if you havent already checked those. i'd replace those first if they have never been replaced or look worn, broken, cracked, or if springs seem worn.

Drilling slowly

If the battery is OK then the problem will be in the variable speed trigger switch.

Dewalt dc 988 cordless drill the same problem with those Chinese batteries and find that this problem is quite wide spread with many brands using these batteries. I'm speaking from experience with our battery factories. No quality control!
