If your wireless card has gone out this could have been from a power short because of the sudden lose and reconnection of power. Check to see if the card it self has any black marks or smells burnt.

You could try unplugging your router and modem for a few min.
then plug them back in, and reboot your computer.

Shut off won't turn back on

how long have you waited since it shut off? it may be overheating. if you've waited for a while and it still won't power up, you may need to test the power supply. if you don't have a power supply tester and most people don't you can remove it from the case and take it to any pc shop. they may charge you a couple bucks but most shops won't do that. if it's bad it will need replaced obviously, if it's not let us know :)

Lightning in area. Cable issues ---resolved. Laptop wireless working fine. Desktop internet won't connect. Attempted restore. No go.

Most likely the power surge generated by the lighting has fried the network chip - you will have to replace the wireless card in the desktop. You can easily check for that by booting from a Linux Live-cd and try to use it in there.
