How do I replace the Ingition Cylinder on a 1999 pontiac sunfire that has a passlock system

this is a dealer repair, if u do it u will be unable to start the car and will end up taking it to the dealer for re-programing of the module to accept the new key.

You need to get rid of passlock or spend a lot of money in the new cylinder and key that only a dealer would make. There is a detailed write-up for bypassing passlock here: http://newrockies.ca . The guy is great, and this was the only way I was able to save my Park Avenue.

I installed a new steering column in my 2004 Pontiac sunfire and now it will not start. It tries then I beta back fire.

Anti-theft system isn't allowing it too .
The Passlock™ System is provided in order to prevent vehicle theft if the ignition lock cylinder is forced to rotate or the ignition switch is operated while separated from the ignition lock cylinder case. If starting is attempted without authorization from the Passlock™ System, the powertrain control module (PCM) will disable engine starting. Start disable may be in the form of fuel disable or starter disable, depending on engine application.
The components of the Passlock™ System are as follows:
• The ignition lock cylinder and key
• The ignition lock cylinder case, including the Passlock™ sensor
• The ignition switch
• The body control module (BCM)
• The security indicator on the instrument cluster
• The powertrain control module (PCM)

( 1998 Pontiac sunfire ) Is it possible just to remove the vtd on a 1998 pontiac sunfire and how can I find out if it does have the vtd on this 1998 pontiac sunfire ...car is not starting ...ruled out...

Security light lit on the instrument cluster ? It should have anti-theft system . No , can't just remove it . It has componets - key lock cylinder housing , software programmed into control modules etc... If you just removed or disconnected the pass lock sensor the pcm -engine computer would not see a coded message ,so it would disable fuel injectors an maybe starter . Your best bet ,have a qualified repair shop diagnose it .

Is it possible just to remove the vtd on a 1998 pontiac sunfire and how can I find out if it does have the vtd on this 1998 pontiac sunfire ...car is not starting ...ruled out everything else ! Any help...

Is the security light lit on the instrument cluster ? The vehicle has spark ? Does it have fuel pressure ? Did you check with a fuel pressure gauge ? The passlock anti-theft system use's a sensor in the ignition lock assembly .
The Passlock™ lock cylinder is a locking cylinder that turns a rotating magnet past a stationary hall effect sensor. The rotating magnet creates a resistance code (R-Code) that the cylinder sends to the instrument cluster. The Passlock™ lock cylinder interfaces with the instrument cluster through a 3 wire connection. The 3 wires have the following functions:
Plus software programmed into the instrument cluster and PCM/ECM engine computer .
There is nothing you can do if the anti-theft system is not working , taking out parts won't do any thing , the software in the computers still won't let it start . Your best bet ,take it to a GM dealer .

I have a question about my 1999 Pontiac Sunfire. I have a key, that has a hole, with a black center. is that black center for the anti theft system?? and if that key is not used, will that cause problems?...

there is nothing special about your keys , no transponder . Has a hall effect sensor that is part of the ignition lock cylinder housing . You could get a key made at hardware store . woludn't make a difference .
