Question about Maytag Neptune MDG9700A Gas Dryer

1 Answer

Thud sound, once per rotation

I have a Neptune MDG9700AWW. 2005. I makes a once-per revolution thud. Very annoying. I took the top off to find that the weld seam of the drum is flaking apart at one end, at the location of the thud sound. That is, when a roller hits the open seam, the drum sinks and rises, making a 2-toned dah-dum sort of thud. One can watch the sound and weld seam location synchronize.

My question: Is this covered by a Maytag warranty? The seam gap is nor rusted, by simply gone, with wavy metallic edging and no hope of re-overlap and solder/weld. One can see light from inside the dryer.

    onthejob5130,

You're the man. I never thought of the stainless steel drum angle.
    I'm working it. Many thanks

In the meantime, I may try the short term vent sheet metal and duct taper so I can avoid the thud.

I HAVE A MAYTAG NEPTUNE DRYER AND THE SAME THING HAS HAPPENED. I STARTED HEARING A THUD WHEN THE DRYER WAS RUNNING AND I TOOK THE TOP OFF TO FIND THAT THE METAL SEAM INSIDE THE DRYER DRUM IS CRACKED, THIS IS NOT YOUR NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR, THIS IS A BIG MANUFACTURING PROBLEM. I CALLED TO FIND OUT IF THIS COULD BE REPLACED FOR FREE-AND YOU GUESSED IT -THIS IS NOT A PART THAT IS UNDER WARRANTY.

I have the same thud problem and recently I noticed the dryer is taking longer to dry clothes, I just noticed tonight that there is a crack in the drum, rather large. Will this be covered under warranty?

there is a sensor located beneath the lint filter, more the likely the dryer sheet residue is on it, gently brush it off, it has two screws. As far as the loud thud noise is/may be a problem with the drum/rollers/glides/belt/idler arm/motor Here is a website that will assist you, once the filter light goes off and the drum will not turn.Good Luck Tim

do you hear like a click noise, it may have tripped your overload switch, it is located on the motor on the inside of the dryer. You will need to pull the front panel off and investigate. the screws on the inside of the door, pry up on the top corners, remove panel carefully as the door switch is connected to it, lift top lid back 90 degrees, look at belt, should be centered on drum and should be able to rotate drum with some resistance. there are two switches on the motor on resets the other trips, the rest will click when reset. Good Luck Tim

How to remove the front panel of a maytag neptune gas dryer

Removal of the front panel requires the removal of the top cover and the console. Disconnect power to the dryer prior to servicing to avoid the risk of electric shock.

Remove the 2 screws attaching the top cover to the rear of the dryer then slide it rearward to clear the screw head from the top cover flange and lift the cover off the dryer cabinet.

Remove the screws securing the heater PCB board and disconnect the black and white wiring harness connectors from the board.

Remove the four screws attaching the console to the washer cabinet and rotate the console down to remove it from the dryer.

Remove the four screws attaching the top of the front panel to the cabinet and the two screws at the bottom of the door opening.

Pull the front panel forward and disconnect the interior light wiring harness then lift the front panel off the tabs across the bottom and move it away from the dryer.

Reinstall the front panel, the console, and the top cover in reverse of the removal steps.

MAKING A

Hello
Some dryers use a motor driven drum.If there is a piece of belt missing this could cause a thud noise.

Also the drum rests in rollers,if a roller is missing or worn this could also be your noise.

Hi, My Hotpoint CTD00 Condenser Tumble dryer makes a thudding sound with every revolution, sometimes it sounds like a pair of trainers are in there! What could be the problem?

Could be a worn drive belt, or more likely to be a worn rear drum bearing, common prob with dryers, you need to remove top cover, and look for anything obvious.

LG DLE2514w electric dryer has loud thud every turn

Hi,
Most model dryers are supported at thge rear of the drum with a bearing configuration, but usually the front of the drum is supported by some lining pads or guides. These help hold the rotation of the drum concentric. It sounds like your drum is not spinning concentric. My guess would be that some new guides might need to be installed.
Hope this helps...

The dryer heats fine but when the drum turns it makes a loud clinking sound like a bearing is going.

IT COULD ALSO BE YOUR BELT OR YOUR DRIVE BELT PULLY SOME DRYERS USE A GLIDER TO ROLL ON OR THAT THE DRUM SITS ON WHITCH IS JUST A PIECE OF LEATHER OR PLASTIC ECT. THAT THE DRUM SITS ON WHILE IT SPINS
