You can't put an OS on the hard drive if it couldn't see it.

If you used another computer to install the OS,It's not going to work either.

You need to disable RAID from bios
then try it, check if the hard drives work elsewhere

You can only install one hard drive for this system, if you want to upgrade the capacity or storage you can purchased hihger specs of hard drive and use OEM version or liecense verison of OS to he system and the respecting drivers for your computer from IBM websites. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=DRVR-MATRIX

Adding A HD TO R40e

You will not really get a GUI for selecting the OS, but if you bring up the boot menu dialog while the computer is booting (before the OS starts loading) then you should be able to select the secondary internal drive (be sure this HD bay is enabled in the BIOS).
You WILL NOT be able to boot from this drive correctly if it was installed on a different computer - the drivers needed will be different from the drivers already installed with your OS on this drive.
You may be able to boot Windows 7 with your IBM, however it will be extremely slow with only 768Mb of RAM. The minimum requirement as given by Microsoft is 1.00GB, and I wouldn't personally make the upgrade without 2.00GB of RAM. If you really want to run Windows 7, I would upgrade your RAM before adding in the additional HD.
I hope this helps, please rate my solution!

Laptop doesnt connect to wireless internet (wireless card is fine

When you reformatted your HD, did you use IBM's method which utilizes a hidden partition? This results in a laptop which appears to be as if it just came from the store, like a brand new laptop.
This method sets up the computer in the exact way that IBM built it. And puts all devices in their proper configurations.
If you have not done too much yet, you might want to try that method right away and see if it doesn't make a big difference in the way your laptop works.

reinstall the OS, but first back up you files. you can remove the HDD located at the bottom of the Laptop. buy a cheap 2.5 inch usb to ide/sata enclosure and place your hdd on it. use a PC to transfer your files. then format the HDD. reinstall the HDD to your laptop and install the OS.

Hi,

If you can attach your hardisk to any Desktop Windows OS computer, you can use the "Check Disk" by windows to check the problem of you laptop hardisk, usually using USB Eclosure will help you connect your Laptop Hardisk to Desktop Computer. Just use "Check Disk" utility to check the Drive, you can do this by clicking MY COMPUTER, then Right Click on your Laptop Drive then PROPERTIES, then TOOLS and click CHECK NOW, then place a check mark on the "AUTOMATICALLY FIX SYSTEM ERRORS" then start fixing, after that, then put back your laptop hardisk on your laptop and see if its works.

Problem installing OS

I think Partition Magic 8 screwed up the hard drive. I suggest, try a different hd, or if you don't have one, go to www.ebay.com and get like a 5 or 10GB hd and try that, cause if it works with a different hd, it proves that Partition Magic 8 screwed up the drive. Anything else, try a new IDE or SATA cable cause sometimes they go bad. try a different OS cd. Anything else I could say is bring it to a local computer store and see what they can do.

Laptop won,t start up.

Possibility that the HD is toast. You can try to put a new HD in and reinstall the OS if you have the install disks. But the expense may not be worth it. $100 for a HD and another $120 for an OS. The one you have looks like its pretty old and it just might be time for a new laptop.
